"What is there so very bad in

and the fellow who smokes it.

Their Business Booming1.
Probably no on thine has caused each a gen
eral mival of trade at A. V. Btreltz's Drug
8toroiu their giving away to their customers of
so many free trial bottles of Dr. King's New
Discovery for Consumption. Their trade is
simply enormous in this very valuable article
from the fact that it always cares and never dit
appointa. Coughs, Colds, Asthma. Bronchitis,
Croup and all throat and long diseases quickly
cured. Yon can test it before baying by getting
a trial bottle free, large size $1. Every bottle

A Western newspaper explains
how a genuine blizzard originates
somewhere in the region o the
north Pole, and sweeps across
British North America through a
sort of funnel flanked by the Laur
entian Mountains on one side and
the Huronions on the other, rising
in some parts 4,000 feet, while on
the Saguenay River the gorges from
sheer cliffs 1500 feet high. The
blizzard strikes against the western
limit of this rocky barrier, and is
deflected so that in Wisconsin,
eastern Minnesota, Michigan and
Illinois its 'force is broken. From
this point, . and the Rockies and
Sierras; further south, there is an
unbroken plateau to the Gulf of
Mexico, where the blizzard disports
itself unchallenged. South of the
mountains the arctic currents are
less severe. Manitoba is only
mid-station in its career.

An individual, who habitually
drives about in a open conveyance
with perfect freedom from catarrh,
happens on one occasion to fall
asleep when he is out, aud the next
day. has cold. The explanation of
the phenomenon is to be found in
the fact that during sleep nervous
energy is lowered and the system
therefore Jess able to withstand the
injurious effects of cold. If we as
sume that the individual was also in
a state of intoxication at the time,
the damage done by the cold would
be more serious, and the depression
by alchohol is superadded to that of
sleep. It is therefore not surprising
to find that inflamation of the lung3
is frequently contracted under such
circumstances. We instinctively ac
knowledge the nervous depression
during sleep by taking the precau
tion to throw a rug over the knees
before our forty winks on the din
ing room sofa. Chambers Journal.
How Men Die.
If we know all the methods of approach
adopted by an enemy we are the better enabled
to ward off the danger and postpone the moment
when surrender becomes inevitable In many
instances the inherent strength of the body euf
ficea to enable it to oppose the tendency toward
death. Many, however, have lost these forces to
such an extent that there is little or no help.
In other cases a little help to the weakened lungs
will make all the difference between sudden
death and many years of useful life. Upon the
first symptoms of a cough, cold or any trouble
of the throat or lungs, give that old and well-
known remedy Boechee's German Syrup, a care
ful trial. It will prove what thousands say of it
to be, the "benefactor of any home."
The book that most influenced
Senator Ingalls1 youth was "The
Earth and Stars' I don't know
who wrote it, says the Senator, but
to it I am indebted for a larger
horizon than I had before and a
broader grasp of things, for it gave
me the first faint conception of the
infinite 'depths of the universe. It
showed me that the earth is so far
irom Sirius, ror even from Alpha
Centauri, which is said to be 230,
000 times as far off as the sun ; that
it takes years for a ray of light to
come from them to" us, and other
stars are so distant that if they had
machinery for looking upon the
earth and seeing its inhabitants,
some of them would see it as it was
during the havoc of Napoleon',
others would see the wars of the
Roman Empire, and the preaching
of Jesus and his apostles; others
would follow the movements of
Adam and Eve in the Garden of
Eden, and still more remote gazers
toward the earth would see primor
dial man as he. dropped his prehen
sile tail, or the earhquake shocks of
the earlier ages when granite was
boiling. It is one of the most stu
pendous thoughts that the human
mind is capable of grasping, that
the whole history of our race is still
being; recorded day by day in the
myriads of orbs that swing in our
evening, sky. - That little book
taught this truth, and it greatly in
creased the range of my vision and
enabled and inclined me to seek
various points of view in the exam
ination of every question."

In 1870 the American record of
horses known to be able to trot in
2:30 or better embraced only 151
horses. Last year there were over

A single bottle of Ballard's Horehond Syrup
kept about your house for immediate use will
prevent serious sickness, a large doctor bill, and
perhaps death, by the use of three or four doses.
For curing consumption its success has been
simply wonderful, and for. ordinary conghs.colds,
sore throat, croup, whooping cough, sore chest
hemorrhages its effects are surprising and won

Mr. Henry Watgen informs the
us that he raised last season
from a quart of seed, between four
and five bushels of peanuts. The
yield is a sufficient illustration that
the soil is adapted to the culture of
peanuts and that the business can
be made" prAfita"ble. Mr. Watgen
will plant about a half bushel of
seed this year and test the matter
still further. He plants the seed in
rows about three feet apart and
eighteen inches space between the
hills, and cultivates them very much
as he would potatoes. La'je in the
season, when the vines have nearly
ly reached their growth he throws "a
few shovels full of dirt on top, but
not entirely covering the vines
though this is not absolutely neces
sary which process he tfiinks in
creases the field. , In the Omaha
market raw peanuts are now quoted
at 6 to 7 cents per pound, or $1.30
to 1.40 per bushel, and it fair to
assume that the price named is a
fair average. While the yield Mr.
Watgen procured from a .quart of
seed may be exceptionally large, it
will be seen that the peanut crop is
profitable even with a lighter yield
and lower prices. The experience
of others who have grown peanuts
in this vicinity will be cheerfully
noted. Gothenburg Independent.
Who is Your Best Friend.
Your stomach of course. Why? Becauso if it
is out of order you are one of the most miserable
creatures living. Give it a fair honorable chanco
and see if it is not the best friend you have in the
end. Don't smoke in the morning. Done drink
in the morning. If you must smoke and drink
wait till your stomach is through with breakfast.
You can drink more and smoke more in the even
ing and it will tell on yon less . If your food fer
ments and does, not digest right, if you are
troubled with Heartburn. Dizziness of the head,
coming up of the food after eating, Biliousness,
Indigestion, or any other trouble of the stomach,
you had best use Green's August Flower, as no
one can use it without immedia?s relief.
Probably the most disappointed
woman in Wisconsin to-day is the
Rev. Olympia Brown, the champion
of woman suffrage. Since the news
came that the Supreme court had
reversed the decision of Judge
Winslow in her case against the
Second Ward election inspectors,
she has not been heard to peep on
the subject. Repeated efforts have
been made by newspaper men to get
an interview, but without success,
as she will not tolerate the presence
of a reporter- In the halcyon days
of her hobby, soon after the de
cision by Judge Winslow, she was
delighted to' reeefive a reporter, but
then reporters had but little to do
with interviews, as she gratuitously
furnished her own interview al
ready written. But Olympia Brown
is a peculiar woman in many re
spects. .Although 'she is the wife
of J. H. Willis, she chooses to
maintain her maiden name in
preference to the name of Willis,
which she says is a good enough
name, but is not her name. Mrs.
Willis has two children, and, a short
time since, when a young man who
was taking: the census called to ob
tain the necessary information, she
requested that he register the chil
dren's name as Brown and not Wil
lis, as they were her children. The
census-taker refused to comply, as
the law compelled him to enter them
under the name of the father, and
down they went as Willis. This is
only one of many peculiar incidents
as a result of her sticking to her
maiden name. Milwaukee Sentinel.'
The Child Recovered-My little girl, aged
seven years, was afflicted with a severe cough and
cold. She could not Bleep, but coughed almost
incessantly. I was induced by a friend to try
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy and was aston
ished at the immediate relief it gave her. I
would not be without it in the house for any
price. I have tried many remedies for coughs
and colds but this is superior to anything 1 have
ever tried. Prof. J. M. Mehan, Capital City Com

Resolutions of Respect.
At the memorial meeting of S. A. Douglas Post
last Saturday, tho following in memorium of
Anthony Ries were adopted.
Whebeas, In the death of oar late comrade,
Anthony Ries, our country has lost one of its
brave and loyal defenders, our city one of its
most active, public spirited and honored resi
dents, this Post a cherished comrade and his
family a loving husband and father, therefore be
it Resolved, That in this dispensation of
Providenco the membciB of this post see another
instance of how fast the old ex-soldiers are going
along in the course of time to that other and
better land, where war's alarms are not heard,
and that thoso of us who remain here are hasten
ing along on the same course where we must aU
march. That our city has, in the great proces
sion it gave to to the funeral of our comrade, only
testified in part to the prominance the deceased
hold in our public offices. That the chair of the
deceased in this post be draped in mourning 30
days. That we extend to the family of the
deceased our warmest sympathy and friendship;
we sorrow with them; it was our dead that we
buried as well as theirs, our loss as it was theirs.
That these resolutions be spread upon Poet
records and a copy given to the family of the
deceased.

Bob ijord. the hero who shot
Jesse James, is eternally disgraced.
He has been living in Mexico for
two or three years, and tried to keep
up his reputation as a choice desper
ado. The other day he challenged
a man named Miller to a duel, never
thinking for an instant that the ur
bane gentleman would cheerfully
accept it. Mr. Miller, however,
was quite enthusiastic over the
scheme, and at the hour appointed
tor the shooting match appeared
with a revolver a foot long, but Mr.
Ford had important business else
where and did not come to time.
He is therefore in disgrace, as he
should be. The man he killed was
not a paragon of virtue, but the
crimes committed by Jesse James
did not authorize JbJob iord to shoot
him in the back. The latter having
been quite successful in the mu
