We understand that the widow
of George Heed, who was frozen to
death a few weeks ago,, in conse
quence of being to drunk too take
care of himself, will prosecute the
saloon keepers of Broken Bow, un
der the Slocum law, to recover dam
ages to a considerable amount.
Such a prosecution, if successful,
would doubtless be a great hardship
to the saloon men who sold the
whiskey to Reed, without any
thought that any special harm com
ing of it, yet no great amount of
sympathy need to be wasted on
them fr they gave bonds and took
out licenses to sell intoxicants, with
a .clear understanding that they were
assuming the responsibility for all
damages that would grow directly
or indirectly out of the traffic.
Since the above was put in type we
have learned through Sullivan &
Humphrey, the attorneys for Mrs.
Reed, that they have commenced

Mr. Joseph Medill, of the Chicago
Tribune, who is' traveling in the
south, has been interviewed at Jack
sonville, Florida, on the tariff ques
tion. He assumes the question that
the Republican party is pledged to
a reduction of the tariff, and that
the platform of 1884, as far as it
went, was unequivocal on this point.
He says that if Mr. Blaine is nomin
ated he will accept the candidacy
upon whatever platform his party
frames for him. and that the plat
form and the party will be governed
by the exigencies of the occasion as
they arise. Mr. Medill does not
consider that, in endorsing the mes
sage of President Cleveland, he has
taken a position at all antagonistic
to the policy of his party, and he
expresses himself as being very
hopeful of republican consistency
in the approaching presidential con
vention. It is doubtful whether
Mark Tapley himself could have
been more jolly than Mr. Medill
seems to be over the political situa-
won in tne repuoncan camp.

The revelations made in the trial
of the tally-sheet forgers in Colum
bus, 0., are startling even to those
who have kept track of one of the
boldest crimes ever committed by
the democratic party against free
suffrage. The testimony given last
week unveils the whole conspiracy.
It shows how the forgery was com
mitted by democrats high up in the
councils of the party, and that it
was done for the avowed purpose of
gaining a seat in the United States
senate. No blacker page in the in
famous record of tne democratic
party has been written than the
story of the crimes on the ballot
committed in the Ohio election of
1885. They failed completely of
their purpose, but it is worthy of
note that the Mugwump papers
have maintained an almost absolute
silence in regard to these crimes,
which had in view the control of
the highest legisislative body in the
government. The only conclusion
to be drawn is that the Mugwumps,
notwithstanding their supercilious
claims to superior political honesty
are just as willing as the democrats
to profit by the suppression of free
