" Smoking, says the London Hos pital, is no means universally in dulged in on the Episcopal bench. Of tne thirty-four eminent digni taries nho now occupy that exalted position more than half are non smokers. The bishop of Bath and Wells has not used tobacco in any form for fifty years. The "bishop of Worcester smokes neither pipe nor cigar, and never did. The bishop of St. Albans has never smoked in h life. The bishop of Durham is a non-smoker, v but does not wish the statement to convey any sym pathy with or feeling of neccesity for a league against tobacco. The bishop of Gloucester aud Bristol was a moderate smoker until 1860; but when he found that the benefit lie thought he had derived from it ceased he gave it up. The bishop of Oxford is not and never has been a smoker. "He believes that in fame, in purse, in health, and in clenliness he has been the gainer." The bishop of Liverpool is a non smoker, and entirely approves of the anti-narcotic league. King James' "'counterblast" is not with out its modern counterpart. Don't- let that cold or yours ran on. You think it is a light tiring. Bat it may ran into catarrh. Or into pneumonia. Or consumption. Catarrh is disgusting. Pneumonia in danger ous. Consumption is death itself. The breathing apparatus must be kep t healthy and clear of all obstructions and "offensive matter otherwise there is trouble ahead. All the diseases of these parts, head nose, throat, bronchial tubes'and lungs, can be delight fully and entirely cured by the use of Boechee's German Syrup. If you don't know this already thousands and thousands of people can tell you. They have been cured by it and "know how it is themselves." Bottle only 75 cents. Ask any druggist. People just now in Constantino ple are interested in the presence among them of Kara Fatma, the formidable female warrior of Kur distan, who has come on a visit to the Turkish capital. Her deeds of prowess date back to the beginning of the Crimean war, when she led a large body of Kurdish volunteers, who fought with singular daring for Turkey. The Ottoman govern ment remembers her services and requites these by a monthly pension of 5,000 piastres, a sum that in her own frugal home allows her to live with ease. She is tall, thin, with a brown, hawk like face; her cheeks are the color of parchment and seamed with scars. Wearing the national dress of the steamer sex, she looks like a man of forty-nine, not like a woman who will never again see seventy-five. Slung across her shoulders in Cossack faskiou is Her long' sabre, with its jewelled hilt. Decorations shine and sparkle on her breast, while the stripes across her sleeve show her to be a captain in the Ottoman army. 4 4 A.' Concord - Harness ' ON THE DE! Statistics miblished in the North China Herald strongly support the ancient estimates of the population of China. It appears that the authorities of Pekin have recently taken a census for taxing purposes, and that the village bailiffs whose business it is to understate the fig ures, return the population at 319, 383,500. Five provinces are omit ted, and their population, as record ed in the last census; brings the census-, brings the total up to 392, 000,000. Even this figure is inde pendent of the population of Thibet, Kashgar, Hi and Corea, and the total number of souls ruled by the emporor of China therefore exceeds 400.000,000, and still displays a ten dency to iucrease. As the popula tion of India exceeds 250,000,000, the Indians aud Chinese together constitute more than half the entire human race, Mr. Ed. F. Burne, the efficient and worthy cashier of the United States Express Co., Des Moines, Iowa, says: "From the lack of exercise and from close confinement to office work, I have been troubled with habitual constipation. I have received more benefit from St. Patrick's Pills than anything I ever tried. I gave them a thorough test and am now in perfect health. Every bottle sold has given relief in every case. One man took six bottles and was cured of rheumatism of ten years standing." Abraham Hare, druggist, Bellville, Ohio, affirms: "The best selling medicine I have ever handled in my 20 years' experience, is Electric Bitters." Thousands of others have added their testimony, so that the Terdict is unanimous that Electric Bitters do cure all diseases of the liver, kidneys or blood. Only a half dollar a bottle at A. F. The loud mouthed agitator who is, in nine cases out of ten, too lazy to work and by habit a bilk, says the Denver Republican, has always been a curse to labor. He will be, moreso in the f utur than he has been in the past. He works upon the theory that the working people hunger for sensationalism and he feeds it to them. The professional agitator is of as little use to the community as the tin-horn gam bler. JNo one more fully realizes this than the intelligent working-! man. A Dutch steamer, .having over two hundred passengers on board, was struck by another vessel and sank in twenty minutes. Fortunately a considerable number of the crew and passengers were rescued. A fog was prevailing at the time, whicli is explanatory of the col lision. Only two boats were found to be servicable. The latest state ments are that 132 of the pas sengers and crew are missing. . habits have no difficulty in obtain ing employment at home or abroad, where there is any work in progress.
