Gas is going out of use in London houses; the best rooms are never lit by it now. The London Times notes with pleasure a magnificent gift to the city of Bombay given by Dinshaw Manockgee Pitit. We understand that it is fully equal to the gift of Jamesetjee Jejeebhoy, but we doubt if it can surpass that of Ramdani Googoojeede Huckbuckabasehit. We have forgotten what it was, but it was a corker. Philadelphia Call. The inter-state commerce law contained a provision prohibiting pooling. If this meant anything it meant that the railroad companies must not combine to put up rates. Yet under the name of ''Weighing Bureaus" and "Associations" the old pool commissioner with a new official name is given power to put up rates, and put down competition far beyond any power passed by the commissioner in the pool times. From the time of Lincoln down not a E resident has occupied the white ouse, but that attempts have been made on his life, and in two cases successful attempts. Yet a number of men can be found who are will ing to take the chances of assasina tion. An old negro who was preparing to remove his household chattels, und who desired, as the representa tive of a certain class or negroes always doe5?, to create the impres sion that he possessed valuable goods, looked slyly at several ac quaintances, and then calling one of his children, said: "Tell yer mudder not ter fill my pussonal trunk wid dat silverw'ar. Pereira Mendes, one of the best known Hebrew rabbis in this country, puts a great truth tersely and well when he says: "Humanity is not religionized if women need escort of a night." He might have added, a city is not civ ilized so long as women without an escort must go hungry in its streets of a night, as a woman novelist, whose name is known over this country and Europe, has done in New York within a fortnight, be cause no restaurant, until she could provide herself with a male acquaintance, would serve her a meal. Kansas City Journal The Mormons in Utah are very desirous of having the territory ad mitted into the Union as a state, but as the movement in this direc tion is opposed by both the demo cratic and republican committees, the plans of the saints cannot be carried out. Utah has the requisite number of inhabitants, but as a majority of the people are in f avor ingofa theocratic, rather than a republican form of government, it is best tor Uncle bam to keep them immediately under his thumb, until his Morman subjects have become somewhat Americanized. Carlyle refers to Dickens as an actor, having seen him in one of his amateur performances. He gave it as his opinion that Dicken's genius was essentially histrionic and mimetic; that with his faculty of keen and minute observation, his general alertness of mind and body, his mobile power of expres sion, he had all the requisites of a successful actor, and that had he lived at a great period of the drama, in the Elizabethan age for instance, his genius would have found its appropriate outlet on the stage. He would have become a popular comic actor, writing a humorous piece now and then, perhaps as was the custom of such actors in those days. But while living under dif ferent conditions and working with his pen, his books still retained and revealed the native genius of their author. They had the sustained, if rather jerky liveliness, the pleas ant tricks and mannerisms of a the 1m.-.-. 1 L..,.n rninn stage. He was, in short, a born uuLor. wunenaeum. A report just prepared by Rev enue Collector Calhoun of this state for transmission to Washington shows that there were 2,534,920 gallons of distilled spirits made in district of Nebraska in the last year and 2,280,512 gallons sold. After suffering for more than three years with disease of the throat and lungs, 1 got so low last spring 1 was entirely un able to do anything, and my cough was so bad I scarcely slept any "at night. Streitz' Ouray offers to the refined and wealthy of the overheated East a harbor free from each and every evil tending to make life a burden in the lower and more densely po pulated altitudes. Ouray is head quarters for scenery; the distribut ing points for climate; the angler's heaven and nnnrod's paradise. We have drives lovely beyond discrip tion. We have walks were lovers can kiss without detection and em brace without discovery. We have densely shaded grottos where the overhanging boughs shield the sus ceptible and unsuspecting, and a constituency the male portion of which is accommodating beyond be lief. Come early and avoid the rush. Ouray (Col) Muldoon. In a gathering recently of five or six men, most of whom are at least reported to be wealthy, doubt was expressed by each one it there is a man in New York who could draw his check for 1,000,000 and have it honored in actual cash. One of the group, a prominent financier, said: ktT know or an insbance not long since which is a fair illustra tion of these million-dollar checks. A London man had a business trans action in Avhich a payment was to be made to him of 68,000. For business reasons he did not wish the checks to be passed as in ordinary business transactions. A. check had been given him on Mills, Glynn, Curne & Co., who are the recogn ized outside bankers of the Bank of England. He went to them and demanded the cash for the check. They had not so much money on hand and were obliged to ask him to wait until they could go to the Bank of England and procure it. When he had secured the cash he went to the other bankers to make a deposit. The. second house re fused to accept the moner on depo sit until he had explained to them in the fullest manner where he got it. They had never had so large a deposit made in cash at one time. They would not accept it without knowing where it came from, and looked upon him with suspicion for having so much cash in his posses sion until he had explained the cir cumstances of his business. Of course the Bank of England had money enough to meet such a cheek or a much larger one, the same as the United States Treasury would be able to meet a great demand. But the fact that G8,000 should be a stumper for two of the biggest banking establishments of London indicates how small a part actual cash pkvys in the business transac tions of the day."
