Philadelphia aldermen differ from
the New variety. Instead of lining
their own pockets they enrich the
city coffers by charging an elevated
railway company $500,000 for a
franchise, besides a tax of 10,000
for each mile constructed and 2 per

A new political party has been
organized in California. It bears
the somewhat suggestive name

demanding the repeal of all laws
permitting and encouraging immi

Canada is increasing her militia
and her mounted police force and
now the question is whom does

whom does it propose to protect it

seem to be wise policy for it to re
strict, and not to increase its bur
dens. Companies of state rangers have
been instituted in Texas to look
after train robbers. The "Lone
Star State" intends to have no fool
ishness with these desperate robbers

Southern industrial development
is going on at a great rate, if the
figures that are given from time to
time are at all reliable. It was

000,000 of capital was invested in
that section during the first half of
1886, but for the same period of
this year the investment has been
161,000,000. or two and a half

is taking on a staying look, and if
the rapid developement of it con
tinues a fow years, "the booming
soutli" and . "the booming west"
will be traveling in double harness
for the same destination.

ered in Chicago a series of stirring
addresses in behalf of the exiled
Ponca Indians, is making a sensa
tion in Eastern cities, where she
has been speaking to crowded
houses. Her subject is the general
Indian question, its needs and its
mistakes. She claims the great de
mand is for a supreme court of
judges who shall have jurisdiction
of all Indian cases; that red men,
should hold their land m severalty,
and be allowed the rights of citizen

has recently received pressing invi
tations to visit England. She would
as a civilized, cultivated Indian lady

W. H. Anderson of Bockton has
in his possession one of the most
valuable relies of the rebellion in
this county and perhaps in the state.
It is nothing less than the banner
that was captured by Mr. A. at
Columbia, S. C. in 1865. It is the
banner of the Brooks Guards of
Charleston, S. C, and bears date
May 12, 1861. It is about 45
inches square, made of blue silk
double and embroidered with solid
fringe and a palmetto tree and
eleven stars on the back. It has
also in gold letters, "In God is our
trust." Mr. A. was among the first
of the Federal army that entered
Columbia, S. C, and secured posses
sion of the two banners, the other
of which is in the possession of
Col. S. D. Nichols, of Panora,
Guthrie county, Iowa, who com
manded the Fourth Iowa at that
time. The flag is of the best of
blue silk and is in a good state of
preservation. This flag is said to
have been made by the ladies of
Charleston, S. C, and presented by
them to the Guards, who were
named in honor of the infamous
Preston Brooks. Beaver City
