The white paper, or newsprint,
shortage causes the secretary of agri
culture to turn his eyes northwest
ward and make some predictions
concerning Alaska. It Is destined,
he believes, to become a second Nor
way. Its Immeasurable water power,
vast deposits of coal, enormous for
ests of rapidly growing species of
wood suitable for pulp and tidewater
shipments will make It, the secretary
forecasts, one of America's principal
sources of paper. Alaska Is a large
reservoir of natural riches. Tae
United States bought It for a song;
a nation never make a better Invest
ment. In mineral wealth alone it
has paid for itself over and over
again. Its fisheries have paid for it
many timeB. Alaska is no begrar
territory: It is a great reserve of
national wealth. Record.
We can give some intelligent
thought to a problem of the greatest
moment, that If distribution from tae
fanner to consumer, which shall
eliminate some measurable portion
of the unnecessary waste seemingly
inseparable from present methods,
writes Arthur W. Douglas in Na
tion's Business. We have enough
vital problems in the absolutely es
sential matter of agriculture to keep
us engaged for years to come. Mean
while the farmer. In desperation,
seeks to solve them for himself and
makes steady headway through co
operative associations.
