booming. Now the figures show
that the center of population has
moved a long way eastward, and
that with the exception of a few ex
tra good places, such as Alliance, the
western towns are losing population
while the eastern factory towns are
making big gains. One favorabl
sign, however, Is that there aro scmi
ten million more individual farmers
In the country than the count
showed ten years ago.
Farms are like factories in sorno
respects, but unlike them, there la a
limltto the slie whlih can bo han dled
efficiently and supervised ccon
Ically. Several times there havn
been sttempts to run big plantation
on the factory plan, but fortunately
the results have been sufficiently
disastrous to put a stop to the ef
forts. Nothing shows the fallacy or
such a forecast better than the cen
sus figures and it's worth something
to know definitely that the middle
class is not only prosperous, but Increasing.
