An Interesting fact that has ap
peared recently Is that the, valuation
of property in Alliance Is pretty close
to five million dollars. The 1919
rolls place the assessed valuation at
1983,678, and this figure Is one-fifth
of the total.

George Neusw anger, manager of
the Farmer's Union store, was forced
to take to his bed Saturday morning
with what his physician diagnosed as
an attack of the grippe. Late re
ports are to the effect that he seems
to be getting along nicely and will
be back at work within a few days.
Henry Rust, who recently, sold
his farm near. Alliance, last week
purchased the George Mollring resi

mediate possession. Mr. Mollring has
leased the Tom Spencer v residence,
and will occupy It until be leaves the

II. P. Coursey, In company with
A. C. Wall, made a business trip cov
ering three days of last week and In
cluding the towns of Rushville, Chad

Friday evening, November 14 is
the date set for the next wrestling
match. On that date Joe Stakes,
who claims to be world's welter
weigh champion, will meet' E. C.

so very many weeks vago, and man

Mrs. Ida Ross will erect a large
apartment house at the corner of
Fourth street and Laramie avenue,
and work will be started as soon as
plans are approved. The plan is to
have the building ready for occu
pancy by early spring. This will
j prove to be a distinct addition to Al
liance's housing facilities.
A ditch excavator was put into
use on Monday afternoon on West
Third street, excavating the ditch for
the storm sewer, and will be kept
busy for the next few weeks. It
makes considerably more progress
than the pick and shovel method,
and reauires considerably less men.
The machine is the property of the
Smith & Chambers Construction
company. It is seemingly able to
cut . through anything, including wa
ter mains. Someone failed to notice
the location f the water mains on
the chart and in the first day's dig
ging two mains were cut through,
nn RunDlvine the First National
Bank and the other the George D.
Darllnz furniture establishment.
City Manager Smith reports
progress In the matter of preparing
a suitable building ordinance for the
city. He has secured sample ordi
nances for a good many cities the
size of Alliance, and some from both
larger and smaller places, and has
been doing his best to frame one that
will fit local conditions. He has been
discussing the question with con
tractors and others affected, and
hopes to be able to submit a suitable
ordinance at the next meeting of the
council.

E. K. Miller, who lives near
Berea, made The Herald force a
pleasant visit the first of the week
while waiting for a freight on which
he was shipping some stork. Mr.
Miller came to Box Ilutte county
some ten years ago and bought a
half-section of land for $7,000, and
has farmed it since then, He
wouldn't care to dispose of it now
for four times what it cost him, but
thinks that he would have made even
greater profits if he had purchased
ranch land In the sandhills and goife
in for stock raising. He was on his
way to "Aurora, where he will con
tribute a consignment of cattle to
the L. D. Camp sale on Friday of
this week. Mr. Miller made his home
in Hamilton county for some twenty
flye years before coming here, and
