the southwest quarter of section 9-41-61.
This makes the fifth well

log of the well conforming to the
formations found In the Mule Creek

Western States advanced from $1.40.
Monday's bid. to $1.60 bid. $1.70

The rise Is attributed to the good
drilling news coming from the eld
recently. The successful outcome of
the Ohlo-Lusk Petroleum well on
section 3-35-65 brings about a new
situation In the western part of the
field and adds to the belief that a big
oil pool soon will be opened there.
Buck Creek company reports good
news from its offset wells to the dis
covery well. No. 14, on section 35,
where drllllng-ln work has been un
der way for several weeks, on Mon
day commenced to flow oil, shooting
a stream high Into the derrick.
Buck Creek well No. 4, on section
26, where work of cementing off a
water flow has been In progress un
der direction of government experts,
had advanced yesterday to a point
where' drllllng-ln was commenced.
This well showed for several hundred
barrels when the drill first hit the
sand, and a good producer is ex
pected to follow the recent opera
tions. Buck Creek well No. 7, situated
near the center of section 35, is good,
its drillers say, for 200 to 300 bar
rels. On Monday, following comple
tion of new work at the well, It unex
pectedly started to flow and kept It
up for forty-five minutes. The plans
are to make it a pumping well.
Buck' Creek well No. 28, also on
section 35, still is producing 200
barrels dally.
Although winter weather is pre
vailing in the eastern Wyoming oil
fields, active work still continues.
Lloyd C. Thomas of Alliance and Dr.
O. E. Condra of Lincoln made a trip
by automobile through the Lance
Creek and Mule Creek fields during
the week before last, leaving their
car at Edgemont and returning by
train. Drilling still continues and
new, wells are being spudded in.
The North Platte valley country,
west of Alliance, baa been in a fever

well, being drilled six miles south
east of the Ohio well, has been spout

Thursday, It being down to a depth
of 1400 feet. The drillers of the
Centennial expect to go from 500 to
600 feet deeper before striking the

large amount of test drilling In the
territory west of Alliance during
coming months. -
Development of a new field of
large extent In northeastern Wyom
ing la being started by several of the
larger operating companies, accord
ing to J. Leo Stack, vice-president of
the Troy Oil & Oas company. This
new district lies a short distance
southeast of Newcastle, on the Bill
ings branch of the Burlington rail
road. The oil is expected to be found
in the Muddy Creek sand, as In Lance
Creek, but at much shallower depth.
Among the companies which have ac
quired acreage are the Midwest Re
fining, Ohio and Sinclair Consoli
dated. This is the first operation in
Wyoming by the latter corporation.
The Troy Oil & Gas company has two
sections under lease. Most of the
land is deeded. It lies in townships
41 and 42, in ranges 61 and 62 West.
State Immigration Commissioner
Charles S. Hill, of Wyoming, has re
ceived from the United State geolog
ical survey a report on the Upton
Thornton district in eastern Wyom
ing, near Newcastle, which shows
this to be one of the promising pe
troleum localities of the state. The
report goes Into details regarding
that particular district and says:
"The Upton-Thornton oil district
lies on the western flank of the Black
Hills in eastern Wyoming, In Weston
and Crook counties. The oil field
itself is in section 4, township 48,
north, range 6i west, and section 33,
township 49 north, range 66 west,
about three miles northwest of the
town of Thornton, on the Chicago,
Burlington & Quincy railroad. . It is
about 20 miles southeast of the Moor
croft oil field, 90 miles northeast of
the Salt Creek oil field and about 80
miles due north of the Lance Creek
oil field.
"An area-of about 60 square miles,
which includes the territory where
the producing oil wells have been
drilled and the adjacent country, has
recently been examined by E. T. Han
cock of the United States geological
survey, department of the interior,
who has submitted a report on it for
publication. The report is accom
panied by a map showing the boun
daries of the geologic formation, with
contours showing the geologic struc
tures, and cross sections showing the
relation of the different formations
to one another and on sea level.
"There were 16 producing wells
in the field when the examination
was made, and thirteen of these be
longed to the Southwest Oil com
pany, which controls a large part of
the field. The oil conies from a single
steeply dipping sand, which Is
reached at depths ranging from 448
to 843 feet.' The yield per well is
low, averaging five and ten barrels
a day. The oil is of excellent qual
ity and has a specific gravity rang
ing from 0.820 to 0.826 at 16 de
grees C. It is taken by small refinery
belonging to the Southwest Oil com
pany, which supplies local trade with
gasoline and other products.
"The oil field is not on an anti
clinal fold but appears to be on a
structural terrace, where the rocks
dip much less steeply than they do
