THE ALLIANCE HERALD Thursday, December 12, 1018 RAIL RO.l AIIEI 1 VICTORY W. 0. MeAdoo, director Reneral of the rallrnnils of the I'nlted States. 30 Peeember flrst Issued the followlne tenement rcieardinc the assistance of the railroads In the winning of the war: "The railroads were, no to apeak, or first line of defenae. If they had not functioned effectively our armies overseas wluld have been powerless. The result la worth all that It may eost. whether the sum bo lame or mall. I feel also that 1he public has Shown themselves patriotically sym pathetic nnl forbearing In the patience with which they have borne the lnrnn cnlenccs that were unnvoid able as the result of the strain to which our transportation facilities have been subjected in the exigencies of war. This strain Is not yet over, for Europe will continue to be dependent upon America for her food at least un;il her next havest shall have been fathered, and the many cars and en gines will be engaged for some time pet In the demobilisation of our troops. An mediate reversion to nor mality is not, therefore, to be expect ed, and until the abnormal demands of the post helium period are satisfied comparalson between the results of ultiple unitary control of the railroad cannot be fairly made, nor can the public expect to enjoy all the travel luxuries that they had become accus. Strong Men The Nation needs strong men and the right time to begin to build up strong man hood is during the growing period of childhood. Many mothers remember, with keen satisfaction, the days when SCOTTS EMULSION was one of the determining factors in building up the strength of their children. Soott's is a source of nourishment and strength that ought never be over looked by the mother of today who is anxious about her fast-growing boy or girt. Scott & Bownc Bloomfield. N. J. tomed to In the long years of peace that preceded the world war. "As to the future. I prefer to forgo any adventure In the field of prophecy but do feel Justified In pointing out thai by the prompt act of the presi dent In taking over the railroads and putting the guarantee of the govern ment behind them, bankruptcy for many of the proprietary corporations was averted and that, whatever the cost may be, if any It la Insignificant when compared with the contribution made toward the winning of the war. "Under the statute, government control ay continue for twenty-one months after a formal declaration of peace shall have been made by the president. This limitation renders it Impossible for the railroad adminis 1 1 at ion to undertake much that mig'it be desirable in so far as the remoter future of our railroad system Is con cerned. "I am, nevertheless, confident that the Intelligent, enthusiastic and ex perienced railroad men who are asso ciated with me in the United States railroad administration will do all that can be done toward sound econ. omy and efficient operation In th service of the public during that period. Kvery effort will be made to give the best possible service at actual cost. The government is not trying to operate the railroads at a profit but to furnish the people with adequate and efficient transportation without loss, while at the same time establishing reasonable wages and working conditions for f e great army of railroad men and women in the railroad service of the United States." 9 1H Human Development. Man has been on the earth perhaps some twenty odd thousand years, and It Is only the last three thousand that we are much concerned with. To sup pose that a modern Englishman must necessarily he at a higher stage of mental development than an ancient Greek Is almost the same mistake as to argue that Drowning must be a better poet than Wordsworth because he came later. If the soul, or the brain, of man Is developing. It It not developing as fast or so steadily as all that. Gilbert Murray In the Cen tury Magazine. Moon Superstition. LIVC STOCK MORE HORSES NOW ON FARMS Increase In Number of Animals Not withstanding Larg Use of Motor Vehicles. (Prepared by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) Substitutions for the horse have so for failed to diminish his number on farms, where he la mostly bred. The railroad did not verify the common prophecy of the horse's gloofhy future Dearly n century ago, and many years elapsed before the heyday of the bi cycle arrived with Its expected menace to the horse. That machine of pleas ure and toll diverted sttentlon from the first real antagonist of the horse, the electric street railway, and this was a formidable one. Street-car serv lee could not have been developed by horses to the extent that It has been carried by electricity, yet there was an enormous displacement of horses when they no longer pulled street cars, ft is roughly estimated that 2,000,000 horses would be required to move the street cars now In city service, and that farmers would need to keep a stock of perhaps 8,000,000 horses to produce this supply. Tet, horses kept in increasing. Apparently the most effective foe of the horse has appeared in the last ten years In the motor vehicle, although Its Importance in this respect la pop ularly exaggerated. According to ata ttstlcs collected by the United States department of agriculture, the total state registrations of motor cars were 48.000 in 1008, about 000,000 In 1910, over 1,000,000 In 1912, over ?.400,000 In 1915, and 8,512,998 In 1918. Automobiles do not merely displace horses but many are used by men In occupations dependent on either horses br automobiles for personal movement, such as real estate agents, builders, and some merchants and manufactu rers, and there Is also the large public automobile passenger service In cities and, again, the large number of auto mobiles owned by farmers in place of driving horses. With motor trucks and commercial vehicles the case Is different. Here la clearly s complete substitution of fuel power for horse power. It is the opin ion that every motor truck on the av entge displaces three horses. The state records often merge the registration of motor trucks and commercial to hides with that of automobiles, but, to the extent that the separation Is made, It If known that 118,882 of the former were registered In 1918. Prob ably the displacement of horses by mo tor trucks and commercial vehicles LETTER FROM Mil. SMART Your body and mental efficiency are important factors right now. It's no time to be sick. It's no time to allow your system to be drained of its vitality to such an extent that you cai do only a part of the work demanded of you. You oan't be efficient if you are ill. So begin now to take steps to remove the cause that leads to these periods of intense suffering and accept the help of Chiropractic so you can be 100 per cent efficient and vigorous. Why Women Suffer Most women suffer primarily from deranged function caused by spinal pressure on the nerves. This pressure shuts off or obstructs, the life-giving nerve energy, and weakness and disease affects certain organs and tissues of the body. Chiro practic corrects these spinal defects, and thereby removes the cause of illness. Nature cures the effects and builds up the weakened and diseased organs. No drugs, no surgery are used. sTrinsa7gaafeAvafliiij.ik,;kW is Nature's way. Last of all, the farm tractor has ap peared, with conjectural possibilities, but as yet with no perceptible dis placement of horses. Unusual and large demands for horses for war purposes have been made since the autumn of 1914. Dur ing the ten years preceding, from 19, 000 to 40,000 horse were exported an nually, while the imports were from 6,000 to 88,000, so. thut the net exports were no appreciable draft on domes tic production. In the first year of the war 289,340 horses were exported, in the second 867,653, and in the third 178,874 horses, and within less than a pear the needs of the army of this country have called for a large number Of horses. Notwithstanding the various forces that have been working against In crease of horses at their breeding places, or rather, In common expecta tion, to reduce their numbers at s strong rate, the fact Is that horses on farms increased at the average yearly rate of 183,000 since 1900 and more than that since 1910, or 216,660 per Jear. fer capita of the population, farm horses tended to Increase from 0.19 of 1 horse In 1850 to 0.24 in 1890 ant) 1900. after which the decline baa l to 0.20V4 in 1918. or still above J. A( the same time, however, by Cna of machinery the farm feprse constantly gained as a producer. Strange though It may seem, the av erage price of a horse at the farm, all ages and conditions included, Is less than It was four years ago, and even eight years ago. Since 1897 horse prices at the farm for January 1 had risen from $31.51 to $111.48 by 1911, the highest sverage In the de partment of agriculture's record of 58 years, but s decline followed to $101.80 In 1916 and then a gain to $104.28 In 1018, apparently caused by ths war.
