Corporal C. F. Wykoff, former Alli
ance railroad man and member of
the Alliance volunteer fire depart
ment, is now located in sunny France.
In a letter written to the editor of
The Herald, he has the following to
ay : ., as.
"France, May 26.
"Dear Fritnd Lloyd and Bro. A. V.
F. D.:
"Well I have been In France one
and one half months, most of the time
moving around from one camp or fort
until I guess we are permanently set
tled in southern France close to the
Mediterranean sea. and' two-houm"
ride from Spain. I believe it is the
prettiest part of France flowers and
sunny climate, and oh yes, French
and Spanish ffuifl. On boy, we art,
sure setting pretty, for we are the
first Americans who have ever been
here, and only .forty-eight of us at
that. You can imagine our predica
ment in a pretty large town.
;Of myself personally, I am in the
best of health and working ten hours
every day, except Sunday. I am boil
ermaker for America in the round
house boiler shops. There are three
of us, two in the back Bhop and my
self in the round nous.

Washington, with the Wyoming con
tingent. Mrs. Mentzer will make her
home with her parents at Douglas,
during Mr. Mentzer's absence.

The B. Y. P. II. gave a party on
Tuesday evening at the home of Miss
Dora Coker for Miss Ruth Laytoti in
honor of her approaching mariiage.
It was an informal party and light re
freshments were served. All who
were present enjoyed themselves im
mensely. Miss Iiiyton was presented
with a silver salad fork set. A gen
eral shower was given Wednesday for
Miss Layton at the home or Mrs. Ray
Stansbury.

Anson L. Furman. of Marslaud,
and Miss Kdith Rowley, of Alliance,
were quietly united in marriage at
11 a. m. last Monday at the n.ipttst
parsonage, with a ring ceremony
Rev. A. A. Layton officiating. Mr.
Furman lives on a ranch a tew miles
from Marsland. and Mtsa Rowley has
been teaching a school in th? coun
try near that place. The young peo
ple will make their home at Mr. Fur
man's ranch.

and Miss Ruth St. Claire, of Lincoln,
were in Alliance during the latter
part of last week, visiting with the
Mote girls. They returned to their
homes on Saturday.

came to Alliance Saturday to visit
her mother, Mrs. E. E. Johnson, for
the summer. Miss Johnson has also
been visiting with her sister, Mrs
Hughes, of York'.

pleted the army course in the radio
school at the university at Lincoln,
his been sent to Plattshurg barracks.

leaves for France His family will
make their home In Lincoln.

the Alliance city schools, arrived In
the city. Mr. Pate Is well known in
western Nebraska for his activity
along educational lines. He will do
instruction work in the department of
education and mathematics during
the summer school here.
