Only About Half the Steer is Beef Lire Weight 1200 pound 100 Dressed Weight 672 pounds of Beef 56 When Swift & Company buys a steer weighing 1200 pounds, only about 672 pounds goes to market as beef; the other 528 pounds consists of hide, fats, other by-products, and waste. When the packer pays 15 cents a pound for a steer, he sells the meat to the retailer for about 24 cents. But the packer gets only about 6 cents a pound for the other 528 pounds. This means that the packer gets about 16 cents a pound for all the products from a steer for which he pays 15 cents. The difference of 1 cent per pound covers the cost of dressing, preparation of by-products, freight on beef to all parts of the United States, operation of distributing houses, and leaves a net profit of only about of a cent per pound on all dressed beef sold. Large volume of business and utiliza tion of parts that were formerly wasted, make this achievement possible. Year Book of interesting and instructive facts sent on request. In lieu of that counties and rities throughout the state might be authorized to create funds for such purposes, for us" in their own oommunit les. Several other states have made appropriations. "In all branches of war work the need for money for expenses will con stantly Increase. "Ample provision should be made for carrying on the work of the state and county councils of defense, and for conducting the Red Cross, liberty bond, war savings, thrift and other campaigns. Then there are many lo cal expenses In connection with the food and fuel administrations which should be absorbed by the several communities. "Up to this time, these expenses have been met largely by voluntary contributions from patriotic citizens. In that way, the same people contrib ute over and over again, and sooner Or later their capacity to give will be exhausted. Then, too, the great ma jority of our people do not now pay any part of the expenses of these .. ! .. 'it. .).,.,.. . .. it in cuiiipaigiin. i um uvyi i " m " i opportunity to help along those lines. J. All our people should contribute and co-operate, and their interest in all war activities would thereby be In creased. "There are other obligations which we should be prepared to meet promptly and cheerfully. Young men have gone to the front, leaving dependent families behind them. In most instanced provision has been made for them. Circumstances change, however, slcktleeH comes earning capacity is reduced, children are born and bring with them addi tional exjK'nses; and by and by some of the soldiers will come home to be cared for. Nebraska certainly can not afford to fall behind other states in meeting these conditions It will be a great relief for the men at the front to know that their state and their communities stand solidly be hind them and their families in any and every emergency. Soldiers' families should be made to feel that i tis a privilege for us to give, and an honor for them to receive, such as sistance. We who stay at home should be glad to Bhare in the honor and the glory which will come to our country when the war 1b won. "If the convention should adopt resolutions on this subject, a commit tee might be appointed to act with other committees, which may here after be named by other organiza tions, to confer with the legislature. This would be a direct method of gathering and presenting to the mem bersti much necessary information. In the meantime, public sentiment should be aroused to the necessity for legislative action."
