ItATTI.KSNAKKS WITH DYNAMITE Seottsbluff Herald: John Phillip son wr.s in th ecity today to get a li cense from Judge Schenck to use dy namite in blasting a rattlesnake den. which he says is situated near his place, five miles south of Melbeta. John says he killed 1 54 full grown rattlers at that place last spring and also 18 last fall. He is now planning to blow up the den and exterminate the reptiles. The killing of rattlesnakes In dens has been reported at numerous other times in the past, but we have beard of none as late as this. There is a den in the vicinity of Wild Cat moun tain, in Banner county, where the snakes have been killed in large numbers, years ago, and another den is known to exist some twelve miles northeast of this city, where formerly hundreds of snakes were killed yearly. This is the lirst time that we ever heard of the den south of Melbeta, and it is the first time we ever heard of the dynamite process of elimina tion, but we can readily see that the WHEN IN OMAHA VISIT THE "Omaha's Fun Centre rent Nw ho Etr MUsk MUSICAL FXTRAVA8ANZA ClMn. Heal work has bemin ami machinery is be InK unloaded to lie-in the lirst well shaft in this county The point of op erations is twelve miles up Sidney draw a little west of south of Bron son. Twenty-two thousand acres have been leased there by oil men and they are puttinK their own money into the venture. If they succeed there, wells will spring up all over the county in all likelihood and those who have sentiment and art in their soul will be doomed to see black oil fields and work trucks where now a lovely pros pect of emerald fields and pleasant homes beautify the landscape We have more present troubles to WOTT7 about, however, with the war on hands, so we will not worry ex cept to hope their oil strike will bring a tlock of gushers on every quarter section in the valley o NEW OH. Should they strike oil in paviiiK qualities the little village of Dewey will spring Into prominence as an oil c 'liter, as the structure is only it few miles from that place. Among those having the 'oil fever' we now put Lewis Harrow's name. Oil men are inspecting his land and In all probabilities oil will be found la large quantities. IIKYKNNK COUNTY KAKMKIl KII.I.KD ItY HIS Tit ACTOR Sidney Telegraph: The distressing news comes with meager details of the killing of William Westphalen under his tractor. He lived on the Oscar Walsh place, twelve miles southwest. Word was brought that he was found cut to pieces by the plows, but the towering engine stood above Inn stock still when found. He had evidently made a misstep ami fell boiieath the plows, being dragged a distance of perhaps 100 feet, as his cap was found about that distance to the rear of where the tractor had stopped. ' No tlmig else stops lumbago, sciatica aad lame back misery so promptly! I. Jesus Foretells His Passion and Resurrection (vv. R2S4). This Is the third time lie makes this prediction. The circumstance! are most triiiilc. 1. Jesus going to Jerusalem (v. :v'). lie whs going with the full conscious ness of ihe awful tragedy of the cross before him the treiiiheiy of Judas, the fiery persecutions of the priests and scribes the unjust Judgment. 2. The disciples following after (v. :'J). They were in dread bewilderment. His Utterances and demeanor rilled their minds with perplexity, and their hearts with awe. In this state of con fusion, Jesus called them to him and patiently Instructed them. 8, "What needs should happen unto htm" (w. 88, :i4). (1) "Delivered unto chief priests nod scribes.'1 CJ) They shall condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gem tiles." ('.) "They shall modi, scourge, spit iipo'i. and kill him." (4) "The third day be shall rise ag'iln." II. The Ambitiouf Request of James and John (vv. H5-4"i). 1. The request (vv. .'I.vri7). It was for a place of prominence In Ihe kingdom. According to Matthew, their mother was the Intercessor. Many mothers have been used by chll Ireo to carry out that which they were themselves ashamed to do. It is very desirable for mothers to get places for their children near to Jesus, but unfortunately many are seeking ihe pinnacles. of the world and for getting the nearness to t'hrtst. 2. Jesus- reply (vv. :'.s 4."i). (1 To Peteff and John (vv. 38-40). He speaks directly to the men, de claring that they know not what they sk. The Lord many times has to re lirOVe and rebuke us for our blind re- cnests. He showed them that the way io this position of glory was tbrou 't -offering. The cup which they were to drink was all thai was embraced In he agony n the cross. He concedes hat the positions which they craved '.vete obtainable, but in a very differ nt wny from what they apprehended. The way to places in glory In the Kingdom of Christ is through the path if lowly, self-forget ful service, (2 To the ten (vv. 41-4.r). The ten were displeased with Peter and John, but doubtless they were not i'ree from the same selfish ambitious. Christ showed them that to give is greater thun to receive; that to serve Is greater thun to be served. Tin' standard of his kingdom Is to forget eif and serve others, even to give lie's life, Christ Is the supreme ex ample to be Imitated by all who would follow Mill. III. Jesus Cures Bartimaeus of Blindness (vv. 40-51'). Though the weight of the cross vvus upon him, be had time for gracious deeds. Blind Bartimaeus receives his sight. t. Bartimaeus' request (vv. 4 47). He cried to Jean for mercy. The tact that he addressed him us the Sou of David, -'iows that he recognised his Messlahshlp. Though he was blind, his taith enabled him to take hold of Jesus. As SOOH as he hetird thnt Jesus was passing by he cried to him for help. Jesus not only can hear our cries, but he can even tell when a soul yearns after him. and will re spond to that yearulng. . Rebuked by the multitude (v. 48). This rebuke provoked a more earn est cry from Bartimaeus. He h , Ileved that Jesus could ami would help I . . . . . . . mm. ami knew th it was now or never with hltu. The lad that ti.xl has brought salvation within our reach should convince us that it Is time for ns to cry for help. Therefore, we should not allow the opposition of men to keep us foui Clir.st. 3. The blessing granted (vv. 49-o2). Though Jesus kne v his desire, he wished him to definitely commit him self. Ood Is plotted when we come to him with our definite needs. When his eyes were opened, he saw many interesting things, but the su preme object was Christ, for he fol lowed him. Note experience of Barti maeus : (1) A blind beggar (v. 46). (2) His cry for mercy (v. 47). (3) Persistence In his cry (v. 48). (4) Responded to ihe call of Jesus (vv. 49, 50). (5) Made specific request (v. 51). (0) Received his slglll immediately (v. 52). (7) He followed Jesus (v. 52). Ho .v quickly one CM pass froiu sore to Jubllaut dUvlpieship.
