U ' Texas Cattle for Hale A poriod of drouth in the south west is giving Nebraska firmers and stock raisers an opportunity to se cure stock at reasonable prices and at the same time help in conserving the future meat supply of the coun try. The cattle are well bred and will make splendid breeding stock. Most of them are Herefords, but there are also some Shorthorns and Angus available. Unless the middle west states take these thousands of cattle, hey will have to be sold on the market. Yearling heifers are selling at $35 to 45, two-year-old heifers at $40 to 50, and young cows at $50 and up. Purchasers of the cattle may be made in sm: 11 quanti ties at the Kansas City or other stock yards, or in largo quantities in Texas. Lists of those wishing to sell and further information may be se cured from the government agents. T. P. Metcalfe, Amarillo, Texas, or S. S. Jerdan, Fort Worth, Tex. cows hare sold 50c to $1.00 higher than thoseof last week under a fair ly good demand. A very few good BOWS sold as high as $16.50. The supply of Kosher beef was moderate, local packers finding trouble in se curing their live stock. The market was strong, prices being a good 50 rents higher than those of last week, and sold under a good de mand Receipts of bulls were a lit tle heavier than last week; market was steady to strong, prices on bolognas being a little higher. Good butcher bulls sold at prices in line with common steers. Washington With (receipts ex tremely light and far below last week's the trading has been very Ir regular, with the most of It done on a hand-to-mouth basis. The general tone of the market was Btrong with the bulk of the sales about 50 cents higher than last week. Good steers brought $18., medium if and $17.50 and common $13.50 to $16.00. The laboratory at the Army Medi cal School has shipped since April 1 sufficient typhoid and paratyphoid vaccines to (nocultte every man In the army Throughout the process of making the vaccine Is guarded against any contamination. It is then stored in sealed vessels In locked refrigera tors, to which only the two officers In charge have keys, and none of these vessels is ever moved, except in company of one of the officers. In more than six months of large scale production not a 'trace of con tamination has been found. One of the tests of the vaccines in cludes the inoculation of a mouse, a guinea pig, and iy rabbit. If too much tricrosol (a coal-tar product used as a preservative and to kill the bacilli) had been added, the mouse would be killed. Should tetanus germs be present both the mouse and the guinea pig would be killed. With the emulsion corect, as it must be to be used, no animal is killed, and the guinea pig and rabbitr are not visibly affected by t iiinocula tion.
