There is considerable ronjecture
here as to the real reason for the is
suance of such an order, some main
taining that it is because the govern
ment wishes to establish u game pre
serve, and others that it is a war
measure. These lakes are vitally im
portant to the crops in this valley,
and hence are carefully guarded. The
persons who look upon this order as
a war measure assert that it would
be an easy matter for an alien iu the
disguise of a hunter to do consider
able damage to these lakes and in
this way greatly injure the crops in
this county.

$12,000 FIRE STATION FOR NORTH PlATTE
The North Platte Volunteer Fire Department is to be housed in a ne
S12.VC3 home. F W. Dick, secretary of the department, advises us that
the contract for the 1 12,000 Are station is to be let the last of this month
The North Platte department Is a live one. and the boya will certainly have
the finest home in the state when this building Is finished
O. R. Tlghe, formerly secretary of the North Platte department, has
joined the aviation corps of the United States army Tighe was always, like
the writer, rather light headed (he is a blonde .too) so he should make
vood aviator.
SOME INTRODUCTION FROM HARRY HAUSER
Harry Hauser, state president, is a joker. The funny thing about it Is
that Harry always pulls off jokes that are funny they always bring
laugh. The only time that Harry didn't see the joke was a few months ago
when he, as chief of the Fremont fire department, was riding in the seat on
the Fremont fire motor truck, going about forty miles per hour, when sud
denly a freight train blocked the street The truck driver, in order to
avoid striking the train ran the truck into a street light pole. Harry sud
denly left the street, described a curve through the air and landed on the
pavement. The boys say that this was once that Harry didn't see any hu
mor in the situation. ,
But at any rate, Harry la still up to his old tricks. A friend of his re
cently left Fremont to come to Alliance. Harry gave him an Introduction
to the writer and on the envelope gave the following directions: "Mr. Esty
get off the train at Alliance. Stop at the first and only big ewspaper The
Alliance Herald. See Lloyd fat, good looking, dandy fellow. Friend of
all the firemen and a special friend of HauBor Married." Mr. Esty found
us by looking for the fat not the good looks, for we haven't any of the 1st
ter, but plenty of the nrst and it s been dry in Nebraska since May first.
MANY FIRBMHN IN THE ARMY
We wonder just how many of the volunteer firemen of Nebraska have
joined the army or navy in recent months? There must several hudred of
our boys In the eight thousand soldiers who have gone and who will go
from Nebraska We wish tne different aepariment secretaries would send
us a list of the name of those who have gone from their departments. Thi
will assist us in making up a complete state list for the information of all
firemen.
PLUNGE IS NOW AN ARMORY
The Alliance volunteer fi -e department has donated the use of their
large plunge and building to he Box Butte county Home Guards, a newly
orxunixed military company f i home defense. The plunge has been cov
ered over with a substantial f ior and the building is new used twice each
week for drilling purposes. . .
The Alliance recruiting station has
received authority to accept married
men for enlistment in the army
where the married man's wife or
family is not dependent upon him
for support. This applies to enlist
ment in the quartermaster corps, en
gineer corps, and ordnance corns.
Married men are desired for enlist
ment in the signal corps, including
aviation section, only when they pos
sess quaiincatiOB of Bpecial value to
nat corps and can submit proper ev
idence of non-dependence of all mem
bers of their families together with
uivers of dependency signed bv
their wives. There is no objection
to the enlistment of married men in
the enlisted force of the medical de
partment, whose wives or families
are not dependent upou them for
support, provided no special consid
eration is claimed on account of their
conjugal condition.
The local recruiting station is anx
ious to secure men for the cavalry.
This is the first time in months that
recruits could be accepted for this
branch of the service. Heretofore,
those who desired to join the cavalry
could uot do so, but this branch Is
no wopen for a limited number of en
listments.

According to advices from the of
