They are requested to report facts to the state council of defense. TREAT SEED AND SAVE THE GRAIN Millions of UiishciN of Wheat immI Bye can be Saved by Snfeajtuvrd Ing (Yopm by Treatment The t'tvae for Seed Treatment Over SH per cent of the wheat crop and 1 per cent of the rye crop Ib lost through smut. Seed treatment with formal- dehyde solution ia practically 11(0 per cent efficient except In a few sections where th soil is 1 badly polluted with smut spores. The formaldehyde treatment costs less than ! cents per care for materials nnd labor. To this must he added in xetreme cases ' the cost of 20 per cent of the seed grsln. the germinating pow- or of which may be destroyed because, of seed Injury. In every case the entire cost of the trtatment together with possible . .seed injury Is much much less than the value of the ' increased yield which it aa- sure. Inislif Ih Thi. in equal to about 3H it cent of the entire yearly wheat crop and la regarded art a con- aervative estimate, since only smut ted heails actually lost nr consldor d. The Increani'rl number of head hlch henlthy plants would bar thrown out were not taken into ac count. The loss to the billion bushel wheat crop the Department hopes to nee harvested next year would at 3 H per cent, amount to 35,000,000 bush els. With wheat netllng at $2 bushel this would umount to an ex- reiMMngly high tax on the farmers of the country. TraraUnettt of Meewt Treatment of wheat axaiiiBt at Ink mr smut is fairly eaay, not expenalve and fully 9 T per cent effective. The efficiency of the treatment Is, In fact, practically 100 per cent In most of the whoat-RTowInK regions. The per centage of efficiency for the counter aa a whole, however, la reduced by th fact that In largo regions In the Pacific Northwest tho soil la polluted with smut germs to such an exteat that the effecta of seed treatment are nekiHlived. Seed treatment coats not to exceed 5 cents an acre for mater ials and labor. To this coat, howevor, must h added the cost of grain, the germinating power of which may be destroyed by the treatment. Thta amounts at the most to 20 per root. In every case the value of the wheat saved by treatment would amount fu several times the coat of treat ment. Statistics show that tho averagg) annual loss of rye from smut la about 1 per cent considerably leas than the loss of wheat. It is well worth while, however, to troat rye seed al so. Several methods of treating seJ for the destruction of smut spore are in use, but the beat, it is believed, Is the formaldehyde trnatmont. The grain should flrat be cleaned thor oughly with a fanning mill to that smut balls, shriveled grain, chaff, etc., will be removed. After the grain la clean it may be spread on a floor or a tarpaulin In a layer or pile several Inches thick and sprinkled wiht a solution of formaldehyde made by mixing 1 pound of commer cial formaldehyde with 46 gallons of water. An ordinary sprinkling can or a spraying machine Is used and and the grain is shoveled over and over until every kernel la at. The grain Is then placed in a pile and covered with sacks, blankets, or a tarpaulin for 2 horus or over night. It is then dried sufficiently to be run through the drill, after which It may be sown. If the grain is not passed through a fanning mill It should be placed In a vat or tank of tho for maldehyde solution instead of being sprinkled. The smut balls will rise to the surface and may be skimmed off. If the grain is not to be planted Immediately, It must b dried suf ficiently to prevent spoiling when placed in bins. If planted while damp and swollen, more grain by neasure must be used to allow tor the expansion. Are You Ijnoklng Old? Old ago comes quick enough with out inviting It. Some look old at forty.
