lement that infest the town by buy
ing the ma ticket to the next town.

Miss Delia King left Friday for

Mrs. Dr. Jeffrey returned to Alli
ance this week following a visit with
friends and relatives in the Big Horn
Basin and at Casper. She reports a
lelightful trip through the oil fields.
Mrs. J. W. Reed and daughter

dock left Tuesday night for a visit ot
several days in Grand Island and
Lincoln.
Mrs. Ellis Ray returned to Scotts
bluff Wednesday after having visited
with relatives and friends in Alliance
lor several days.
Miss Virginia Warrick returned to
her home at Scottsbluff Saturday.
Rev. O. S. Baker of Chadron was
m Alliance Friday.
Mrs. C. D. Reed returned Friday
from Omaha and Chicago. She vis
ited in Alliance Saturday and Sunday
and left Monday for her home at
Torrington, Wyo.
W. R. Harper left Saturday for a
."hoit business visit in Chicago.
Mrs. Jack Miller returned to Alli
ance Wednesday from Fort Crook.
She has been at that place visiting
her husband, Captain "Jack" Miller,
of Company G.
Herbert Butler was at Hoffland
Sunday.
According to word received by the
Kinks here from the treasury depart
ment it will be at least thirty days
before the Liberty Bonds will be
ready for distribution.
Harvey Koester, living fifteen
miles north of Alliance, was in town
Monday. He says they had a great
rain out his way Saturday and Sun
day. The dry ground was all wet
up and the corn and potatoes are
now coming along in great style.
Lloyd mith has been here from
Omaha this week visiting with bis
parents.
Frank Fair, employed as postman
at the postofflce in Alliance, has been
engaged by the Lakeside school
board as principal of the lakeside
schools at a salary of $100 a month.
He has been given a three-year con
tract. It is said he also plans to
conduct a night school for the bene
fit of those workingmen who desire
to take advantage of the opportunity
afforded them.

companied by her small daughter.
They have been guests at the W. D.
Ilunier home. They came to Alli
ance from Valentine Where they
spent several weeks with Mrs Mif
ka's parents. From here they will
return to Valentine for a brief stay
after which they will return to their
home in San Francisco.
Jerry Butler of Hemingford was
brought to St. Joseph's hospital ear
ly In the week.
A. G. Isaacson, proprietor of The
Fashion Shop, returned Tuesday
from a buytng trip of several weeks
in the East, visiting Omaha. Des
! Moines. Chicago, New York City and
otner points. He reports the pur
chase of an immense line of fall
goods of the latest styles for the cus
tomers of The Fashion Shop.
L. L. Lelth. a former employe of
The Alliance Herald, now represent
ing the Mutual Film Corporation,
with headquarters in Denver, was an
Alliance visitor the first of the week.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
Schafer, at 10 o'clock Tuesday even
ing, an eight and one-half pound ba
by girl, to be named Mary Maxlne.

W. R. Pate, superintendent of the
Alliance city schools, returned to Al
liance Saturday from Lincoln where
he completed a four years' summer
course in the state university and
was awarded his degree of B. A. Af
ter spending Saturday in Alliance he
left for Bayard to join his family on
their homestead.

Asher McCluer of Bayard is re
ported to be ill with typhoid fever at
the Shawver home, 219 Toluca.
George D. Darling and Ray Frost
arrived home Monday from another
session with the fish up on Laramie
creek. They report a considerable
quantity of mud up that way, but the
fish they brought home made them
forget a little thing like mud
T. R. Crawford was at Ainswortb
on business last week.

Miss Alice Carlson is home from a
week's vacation spent in the Black
Hills.
Miss Etta Keane, deputy county
clerk, returned home Monday fol
lowing a two weeks' visit in Lincoln
at the home of her sister, Mrs. R. J.
Burke. Miss Keane brought her lit
tle nephew, George Burke, home
with her.
Ed Henry and Joe Blake are en
joying a visit in Idaho. There are
friends of theirs who are mean
enough to say they expect to visit
Rocky Mountain National Park this
week while "Eva" is roaming at will
there.
T. S. Fielding arrived in Alliance
Sunday after a month's "trip through
the East. He represented the Elks
lodge of Alliance at the national con
vention held in Boston. While in
the East he visited a number of the
interesting places along the Atlantic
seaboard.
Mrs. George Eckhardt. Mrs. R. E.
McKenzie and Mrs. J. O. Parsons
have been visiting in Denver a part
of the past week.
C. E. Rhodes, operator at Ells
worth, and formerly train caller
here, has gone to Marshall, Mo., to
appear for examination before the
exemption board there.
D. E. W. Jones has been given the
contract for the construction of the
new plant to be built at Antioch by
the Alliance Potash Company. The
work will start as soon as material
enough Is on hand to work with. Tht
work will be rushed to a rapid com
pletion. Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Wright ar
home, following a two weeks' trip by
auto through Wyoming and Colora
do. They were at Cheyenne for the
Frontier Days celebration, after
which they went to Estes Park, Col
orado prings, Denver and Manitau.
Sturgeon Brothers received a cat
load shipment of Reo automobiles
this week.
Mrs. E. C. Drake and daughter
are home fro ma visit at Scottsbluff.
Bertha Ma6on has resumed her
duties as pianist at the Imperial fol
lowing a two weeks' vacation. Mrs.
Wiker supplied for her during her
absence.
Miss Elizabeth Plessman left Tues
day for a two weekB' visit at Gard
nier, Mont., and a trip through the
Glacier National Park.
Dr. and Mrs. Mahaffy went to Tor
rington, Wyo., Sunday to drive their
car back to Alliance. A week ago
Dr. Mahaffy abandoned the car after

Mrs. C. H. Fuller and two children

Frank Ryckman is home from Ar
izona where he went a couple of
weeks ago to accept a position. He
was formerly engineer at the city
light plant.

Southwest. He was on a cattle-buying
trip and went as far west as
Fresno, Calif.
Norman McCorkle is attending the
tractor show at Fremont this week.
He will visit friends in Lincoln and
Omaha before returning to Alliance.
Miss Catherine Cable left Satur
day for a visit of a few days at Hot
Springs, S. D.
Mr. and . Mrs. C. C. Wyland of
Lakeside are the parents of a baby
boy born Saturday.
Mrs. Emery Cornu of Crawford
was in Alliance the last of the week.

Word comes from Fort Crook that
private Johnny Williams, of Com
pany G, is lying awake nights wait
ing for the return to the fort of Carl
Rockey Bnd Ed Reardon, members
of the company stationed at Alliance
for recruiting, who were instrument
al in persuading Johnny to enlist.
Johnny is planning all sorts of drills
for the two fellow members of the
company when they arrive at the
fort.

Marius Larsen of Canton was in
Alliance Tuesday on business, mak
ing the trip down by auto, returning
the same evening. He is one of the
prosperous farmer-ranchmen of west
ern Box Butte county.
Mrs. L. A. Berry returned Tues
day morning from a visit of several
weeks with friends and relatives at
Boulder and other Colorado points.

mer Alliance girl, Inez Beck, who
has been physical director of the Y.
M. C. A. at Superior, Wis., has been
appointed physical director of the Y.
M. C. A. at the United States army
cantonment at American Lake,
Wash.
Mrs. M. E. Coleman of Casper,
who formerly lived at Alliance, is
visiting in the city.
Jack True, salesman for the Lex
ington Six automobile line, returned
to Alliance Tuesday night from a
trip to eastern Nebruska on busi
ness. He left Wednesday for Chad
ron to deliver a car to a customer
there.

Thomas at Gordon, Nebr., Sunday,
August 5, a baby girl, to be named
Claudia Pearl. Harold Thomas Is
one of "the Thomas boys". Mrs.
Thomas Is a former Alliance girl.
