BRAINS AND SKILL
IN I HE AW0M3BILE
From Twenty-five. Hundred U Three
Thonsand Pun.-. In Average An
to of Today, Says J. L, Nirobtl
"The most surprising thing about
uutomobiles to me 1 the simple fact
that they render the splendid service
they do," says J. L. Nicolal of Nic
olai & Son. local dealers in Oldsmo
biles. "We now rely on them so
confidently that we lose sight of the
fact that they are in truth wonder
ful, complicated and, in some re-,
spects, delicate machinery."
"In the average car today there
are from twenty-five hundred to
throe thousand parts. In the motor
alone are several hundreds of these.
From our experience with the sim
ple tools we all use in our daily
work, we know the possibility of any
one part giving trouble. If we were
told to operate machine built of
three thousand parts we would wish
we were expert mechanics.
"Besides involving scores of me
chanical principles, many of which
are new to the mechanical world,
automobile construction embodies
many principles of electricity, and of
hot and cold water, and of lubrica
tion, etc. Some of the parts are
shaped by the mighty blows of mon
ster drop forges while others are so
minute and delicate they exact the
care and pains of a watchmaker.
"And when all this is assembled
together, it is mounted on wheels,
and given over to people from every
walk of life, to use with care or
pood at sixty miles an hour.
"It's the brains of the automobile
engineers, and the skill of the motor
oar mechanics, and the science and
exactness of the army of inspectors
that have made the automobile t In
dependable vehicle it is. In the
Oldsmobile factory, for instance, a
corps of inspectors equipped with ev
ery appliance, carefully handles all
materials received. When it has
been made up into various untts
such as motors, axles, etc., these
units are also put through an un
compromising test. The in turn
ure assembled into the chassis and
given over to the road testers, who
are unrelenting in their efforts to
find something and passed on to fin
al inspection. Here every Oldsmo
bile undergoes a most rigid examin
ation and must measure up in every
detail to the factory high standards."
