SHOWS N9 FAVOR
1'iieimionl Striken Down the Young
niul Old Alike Strictly Cold
Weather Ailment
This section has been a surpris
ingly large number of cases of a
tlrlppe and Pneumonia this winter.
Some have the Idea that pneumonia
.s a disease exclusively of the aged,
'ntt this belief Is erroneous accord
:ik to Dr. C. F. Chapman, head of
!he department of health for the city
of Lincoln. He presents figures to
show that probably one-third of the
deaths from this source strike be
tween the ages of ten and fifty years.
This strictly cold weather ailment Is
described as being Invariably a germ
alllictlon. The primary cause of pne
umonia Is said to be generally some
other disease or diseases. Principal
among these Is said to be influenza.
Dr. Chapman has Just iasued the fol
lowing bulletin on pneumonia:
Ten per cent of all f lit? deaths In
the Pnlted States result from pneu
monia. Seventy per cent of all cases
occur hcturcn December 1 anil May
l it Is distinctly a cold weather In
fection. Pneumonia prnclpally af
fects those at the extremes of He.
but no age In exempt. Oslar has
(Hiiied pneumonia "tho friend of the
aged" because Its acute and often
painless course cuts short symptoms
of decay so distressing to tho suffer
er and his friends.
Not Limited to Age
On the other hand, pneumonia
does not confine Its lavages entirely
to the aged, but takes every winter a
havy toll of thosf adults in tho age
periods or particular usefulness to
tin community. Of the 36,911 deaths
recorded from Lobar pneumonia In
the Unied Stntes registration area for
1914, 12,774 or more than one thrd
of the total numebr occurred between
the ages of ten and fifty years. There
exists In man a natural predlsponl
tion to pneumona says Osier wheh la
marked up to the sixth year of life.
Tho liability up to the fifteenth year
of lfe, after which It agan Increases
with every decade.
Pneumonia Is Invariably a germ di
sease. The contagoii8 nature of, lo
bar pneumona Is now well estab
lished and It is of Importance to
know that It must now bo added to
our already long list of diseases In
which a carrier condtlon exists. In
asmuch as the causative ngent may
be present in the mouth secretions of
a large proportion of healthy Indivi
duals. The presence of other di
seases is a great predisposing cause
of pneumonia. They preparo the
soil for invasion. Holding Hrot rank
among these dlsensen Is nfiuenza. An
ncreased number of cases of pneu
monia usually follows on epidemic
of influenza. Individuals who suffer
from respiratory diseases arj peculi
arly sur.ceptible to pneumonia, espec
ially those in advanced ycrrs. Meas
les and whooping cough not Infre
quently pave the way for pneuriionla.
Overcrowding, In street cars, theatres
and other public places Is unques
tionably In part responscble for tho
rpred of pneumonl lna cites.
Why People Buy from
the Stores that
Advertise
You have often heard people ask
this question: "Why is it I never striken bar
gain like you .do?" That person is not a
wide-awake nor careful buyer and does not
read the advertisements.
When a Business Man pays
money to make a public announcement, he usually has something worth while
to offer something that is to your a ) vantage to know- He has a money-saving
sale, a new assortment of styles ; f xtraordinary values of some kind to
tell you about.
To take advantage of these opportunities you
must get at the meat of the newspaper its
advertisements.
THE ALLIANCE HERALD is a bettir advertising medium by reason of the
fact that its circulation is more than that of any other two papers in the
county.
