The H. H. Knox family returned
last week to their home at Fort Mor
gan, Colo. They had been here for

Platte Thursday, where he attended
the funeral of Frank Doran, district
deputy for the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Doran died soddeiiiy at his home
in Ncrth Platte Tuesday of last week.
Mrs. Conley Miller has been en
joying a visit at Lakeside this past
week. -Mr. and Mrs. Miner were
there for Christmas, Mr. Miller re
turning ilia flint of last week, while
she remained for a more extended
visit.

Mrs. Willard Myers of Mason City,
Nebr., has been a guest at the W. D.
Hamilton home the past week. Mr.
and Mrs. Myers arrived shortly be
fore Christmas and spent the holi
day here. Mr. Myers returned to
Mason City while the wife remained
here for a more extended visit. Mr.
Myers Is manager for the Dlerks
Lumber Company at Mason City.
John Havlik, director of the Alli
ance, band, left the first of the week
for Crete, Nebr., where he expects
to visit friends for the next two
weeks.
Mrs. W. W. Johnson Is home from
Pennsylvania where she enjoyed a
three months' visit at the home of
her parents. She had ' Intended to
return some weeks ago, but was de
tained there on account of the death
of her grandmother.

Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Sykcs are here
from Fremont this week. They ex
pect to locate in Alliance or in the
county if they can find something to
do. Mr. Sykcs states that he is
looking for work for himself and his
wifo on a ranch.
II. C. Holzback.'of Creston, Iowa,
has been appointed as traveling aud
itor to succeed M. M. Reynolds, who
goes to Chicago. Tho family Is ex
pected to move here In (he spring
from Creston. Mr.. Holibnck will
make his headquarters hero.
As has been stated In these col
umns before, F. W. Hicks, secretary
of the local civil service board, will
hold examinations in t his city on
Saturday, January 13, at which time
applicants may take the examina
tions to qualify for clerk and carrier.

Friends here are In receipt of a
letter fron Gus Appleberry, a for
mer resident of this city but now of
Rcottsbluff, stating that' he and Mrs.
Appleberry have been enjoying a
trip through Florida and other
points south during the holiday sea

The first Cadillac eight to teach
Alliance is the one owned by William
King. The car was purchased
through Lowry & H enry and came
from Denver to Alliance. It is a
"peach" of a car and Is attracting
considerable attention among motor
fans.

Ralph Hanna of Lincoln was here
Inst week relieving Lineman McCar
ty for a week or more. Mr. Hanna
was employed hore for - some two
years as a lineman. Mr. McCarty
secured a leave of absenco because
of the death of L. O.-McCarty of
Sheridan.
Word has been received here by
Pror. G. M. Burns stating that his
sister-in-law. Mrs. Adley, died at her
home near Dayton, Ohio, following a
severe illness. She had been living
near Dayton several years. Two lit
tle girls, one 11 and the other 7
years old, are left behind.
M. M. Reynolds, until recently
traveling auditor for this territory,
has accepted a position in Chicago
as a special accountant In the sev
eral offices for the road and left Sat
urday night for that place. Mrs.
RoynoHs will go to Chicago later,
and will for the present visit friends
here and In Wyoming.
James and Alberta Turna, both
persons of color, were arrested late
Thursday evening by the local police
and taken to the city Jail. They
were charged with fighting and
swearing. They put up a cash bond
of $12 to insure their appearance In
police court Friday morning, but did
not appear and so forfe'ted their
bond.
Alliance Knights of Columbus go
to Columbus Saturday. January 13,
where they will exemplify the first
degree of tho work of that order,
when some-sixty new members are
received Into membership there on
that date. The Chndron Knights
will exemplify tho second decree,
and the Knights' of .Vrfft IT Plane, file
third degree.
After an absence of about nine
years. A. W. Hamilton, a former
Box Butte county rancher, spnt sev
eral days In Alliance and vicinity the
past week visiting with old friends
and looking around. He lives at
Jennings, Nebr. Mr. Hamilton at
one time owned the Keegan ranch,
enst of the city, selling out to the
present owner shortly before leaving
Box Butte county.
