FARMERS' INSTITUTES
Visits Three Adjoining Count Jen in
Interest of Farmers' Institutes
and Demonstrator Work
County Agricultural Agent F. M.
Seidell left Saturday morning on a
trip Into Sioux, Dawes and Sheridan
counties, where he made addresses
in the Interest of Farmers' Institutes
and Farm Demonstrator . work ar
meetings held at various places in
those counties.
Saturday he spoke on "Farm Man
agement in Western Nebraska," at
the Glen Farmers Institute. Monday
a conference was held between the
county agents of Box Butte and
Dawes county agents at Chadron.
The purpose of this meeting was to
discusB plans for the co-operation of
the two counties in the work for
1916. Arrangements will be made
to hold the Farmers' Institutes,
Good Roads Campaigns, Boys and
Girls Club meetings and other meet
ings at such times that the two coun
ties can make the best use of the
workers sent out from the Lincoln
office.
Tuesday afternoon Mr. Seidell ad
dressed the newly organized Sheri
dan County Farmers' Association at
Hay Springs. That evening he at
tended a meeting at Rushvllle. Wed
nesday afternoon meetings were
held at Gordon.
The Sheridan county farmers have
been watching with Interest the work
done the past season in Box Butte
county and it is proposed in that
county to support a county agent
with county funds. A. E. Anderson,
a state leader in county agent work,
was present at these meetings.
Quite a large number of the news
papers In various counties in western
Nebraska and as far east as Custer
county published articles concerning
the Herld'B special edition contain
ing the annual report ' of County
Agent Seidell, some of them copying
extracts from the report and as a re
sult a number of these counties are
investigating the plans and trying to
make arrangements for similar work
during the 1916 season.,

county ranchman, returned Saturday
from Omaha, where he spent last
week on business. Mr. Krause Is
well pleased with weather conditions
in this part of the country and states
that the fine weather Is having a
beneficial. effect on stock which re

treme cold weather of a couple of
weeks ago.

To have the greatest amount of
milk and butter when there Is ordin
arily the least work to do on the farm
and when the price of milk and but
ter is highest is naturally a matter
of interest to the average farmer. In
order to provide for this, cows must
be bred this month at the latest. The
Dairy Husbandry Department of the
College of Agriculture says that cows
calving in the fall produce not only a
larger part of the butter fat when it
Is most valuable but that they pro
duce one-tenth more butter fat than
when calving at other times during
the year. In addition, cows which
freshen In the early winter and are
well cared for during the winter per
iod go on pasture at the time when
they would naturally be drying up
and this lengthens the milking period
and Increases the annual yield of but
ter. The climate Is also more favor
able In winter where good shelter is
available. ,

The United States Department of
Agriculture says that data on many
farms thruout the corn belt show it

els of corn per acre after a clover or
alfalfa crop as it is to secure 30 tc

from the Agricultural Experiment
Station of Nebraska to the effect that
among investigations, 31 farmers re
ported average yields of 34.5 bushels
of corn per acre on land before seed

after it was plowed up and again
planted to corn.
