SCHOOL PRIZES FORJfllLOREN Fifteen Dollar In Prls.c Awarded by Alliance Commercial Club for the llt F.kmm)s 115 In prizes for the best essays on why Alliance should have a com munity building were paid by the Alliance Commercial Club. Thirty nine essays were turned In to the club, the names were taken off, and they were forwarded to the Judge, V. C. Itundln of Crawford. Mr. Run dln Is secretary of the Crawford school board as well as the Crawford Chamber of Commerce. The first prize of $5 for the High school was' won by Nina VVhaley, age eighteen. It reads as follows: Why Alliance Need a Community lliiilriiiig Where In Alliance is 'here a place for amusement of the children of the grammar grades, pupils of the High school, and men and women after their day's work is completed? This in itself is a good reason why Alli ance needs a Community Building. As It is, young men and girls are led to other placeB which are not perhaps the most suitable. For In stance, the boys and young men are req.uent loafers about the pool halls, depot and post office. Then again, such a building would Increase the value of every piece of property in Alliance. We would have a place to hold our annual con ventions, and a rest room will be In readiness for the farmers wives and children. It will be a place where the clt- Uens may and will collect together and enjoy themselves, and become acquainted with one another. Looking from the financial point of view this building would be much better than a Y. M. C. A. because af ter the building Is completed, there will be no added expense. It is es timated that the expense of the pro posed Y. M. C. A. building would be wo thousand dollars yearly, in or der that It may be properly main tained. If other towns a little larger than Alliance can build and receive the benefit from a Community Building, why can't we? Most of the citizens If tney wisn to go in bathing during the summer time find It necessary to leave ror some resort and thus spend their money which they make, In some other place. The gymnasium, too, will be of great help to those Interested in ath letics. It will also be used as a ban quet hall and do we not need some such place? Instead of paying a big sum for a hall some evening, wny not use the proposed gymnasium, It will serve Just as well. If Alliance cannot see the necessi ty for a Community Building now It probably never win. The. second prize of $2.50 for the High school was won by Tressa Van- dervoort. age eighteen. The article follows: Why Alliance Needs a Community Ilulldlng Probably one of the most promln ent questions whlcn tne people or Alliance are now discussing is the erection of a Community Building, which could be used by all citizens voung and old. Some people are opposed to mis Dlan. saving that the city has no need for any more public buildings, while others feel the necessity of such a place where they could spend their spare time In reading or recre ation. Country people, when in town, would have a place to deposit their bundles and to rest when they are wearied by the drive to town, ana this will help to create a better friendship among the people of Box Butte county. The men of the country ana town could have access to the club room. swimming tank and gymnasium, al so to the reading room. The young people, especially, will enlov going to this proposea nuua Ing. and are now in favor or u, ana working. Many mothers and fathers sometimes do not know where their young folks go after school. Proba bly they are loaOng arouna ine streets, or hanging around the pool halls, wasting both time and money If they have access to Community Building, they could spend their time In clean and wholesome recrea tlon, and thus prevent much of the degrading pastimes. It would also bv gymnasium work, enable students to obtain greater physical strength and exercise their muscles. Nearly all of the High school stud ents are back of this proposition and are eager for a building which would h of great value to them. ot. behind the Dlan and work hard and earnestly. The Cbmmerc lal Club, as well as the High Bchool needs your support for this proposi tlon. We want it to work. Help us in the campaign for the Community Building. First prize. $5. for the grade schools was won by Irma T. Ellis aee ten. Central school. The article follows: Why Alliance Needs a Community Ilulldlng Alliance should have a Commun itv Building for the following rea sons: 1. To keep the boys and young men off of the streets and teach them to prefer good, not evil, plac es. 2. To keep them out of saloon where gambling, drinking and bad language are practiced. 3. To have a Y. M. C. A. room for the young men of that club. 4. For a Y. M. C. A. club, as will probably be organized If a room Is to be had. 5. To afford a place of Innocent fun for those who wish It, as Alii ance is a city of large transient pop ulation and there are many here w ho have only their sleeping room and would enjoy something of this sort. 6. To have a rest room where people traveling may go to rest be tween trains, thus scattering the news .far and near thHt Alliance Is up-to-date and progressive. 7. Kanrh and farm people may go and find a comfortable, clean rest ing plnce while doing their shopping. 1 hey would appreciate It greatly. 8. To have a swimming pool for those who cannot afford to go to one out of town. 9. To have a physical culture room which brings health to those who have the luck to practice It, thereby making stronger men for Box Butte county and giving strength to the weak and make us more wise business men, and doing good to humanity. 10. To afford a gathering place for the Commercial Club, most nec essary for the further future growth of Alliance and this vicinity. 11. It would be a large saving In rent and various other expenses for he Commercial Club and these oth er organizations and by affording hem much more roomy and com fortable quarters and meeting plac es. 12. Alliance should have a com munity building because there Is none in this part of the state and Alliance Is the largest city In this part of the state, and should there fore lead In this matter of a Com munity building. 13. Alliance should have a Com munity building because of Its peo ple, and especially Its poor people, who. "Far from the maddening crowd's Ignoble strife, Their sober wishes never learned to stray Along the cool sequestered vale of life; They keep the noiseless tenor of their way." -From Elegy written In a Country Church Yard, by Thomas Gray. Second prize, $2.50, for the grade schools was won by Ruth Hawes, Emerson school. The article fol lows: Why Alliance Should Have a Com munity Ilulldlng Alliance should have a Commun ity Building and needs one badly. It will be a great help and Improve ment to the city. If there was such a building here, Instead of loafing around the streets and going out of town to find enjoy ment, the young people could go up there. At present the young folks are get ting quite disgusted without any sort of entertainment. They think of the good times they have had when vis iting other places where a commun ity building Is erected. This building would contain a large number of rooms. It will be building such as Alliance has nev er had nor will If they don't get to work and help boost. The building will contain a swim' ming tank, for the boys and girls. Also a room will be fixed for women when shopping to come In and rest. The men wUl possess a smoking and resting room. It will also provide meeting place for our farmers, ranchers, merchants, and commerc ial bodies, where they may talk ov er various subjects, that may arise from time to time, pertaining to the welfare of the community. Now the only enjoyment Is the skating pond. Not every one can skate so this Is of no use to them. While if the community building was here they would all have a good time. The people of Alliance for years have been saying that they have no place to go for amusement, nor any place for their children to enjoy themselves. So In this case no more amusement would be needed. It other towns the size of Alliance ean erect such a building that costs from twenty to fifty thousand dol THE "PRUDENT S, A 353 i It is all right for a man, when he Is along in years and can AF FORD it, to spend money for luxuries, but the young man and the middle aged should if member that "Life's December" comes to ev eryone, and that to be old and 1HX)K is life's greatest tragedy.
