TORRENCE SPOKE SUNDAY Union Service Held August 0 In Bap tist Church- Torrence Spoke "on European War The union service of the churches Sunday evening, August 9, was to have been held on the lawn at the Baptist church, but on account of the cool weather the service was held In the church. Rev. Torrence preached on the European war and the Christian war, using as his text Epheslans 6:11. "Put on the whole armor of Qod that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devlL" In the opening, the speaker voiced the sentiment that we all lament the terrible war cloud in Europe, and we should all as earnestly pray that the ing of lngs, and Lord of Lords would so move the hearts ajid lives of those concerned In the war as to cause them to seek and find condi tions of peace promptly. The greatest battle of the universe is the conflict between God and the Devil. The followers of Jesus Christ the Son of God, are His soldiers thru whom God Is carrying on this con flict. Depending upon ourselves, In our weak human nature, we are fic kle and would fall, but our Lord kows our weakess and comes to our success. As our Elder Brother, He assumes the role of the big brother and not only sets us the perfect ex ample of service, but also actually provides the strength and skill for the conflict, as well as guaranteeing victory. That guarantee is in Ills life-blood which was shed on the cross of Calvary. So He has a right to command with all authority from God the Father, that we "Be strong in the Lord and in the power of Ills might." His strength Is almighty strength for He is the omnipotent God. His might is that of infinite ability as is wonderfully pictured in Epheslans 3:20: "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, ac cording to the power that worketh la us." We are creatures of desire. From the time the child begins to talk he is asking favors of his par ents. Till the time his hair is white and he walks on the brink of etern ity, just like big children, we are asking favors of our Heavenly Fa ther. Too often when we should be thanking God for favors received, we are storming Heaven with our "wants." It Is "I want", "I want", "I want". Our Lord knows what we need and, if we ask for things which are for our own good. He is only too glad to give them to us. Here we see the multiplication of his ability. (1) He la able to do what we ask, (2) He Is able to do all we ask, (3) He is able to do all we ask or think, (4) He is abl) to do above all we ask or think, (5) He is able to do abundantly above all we ask or think (6) He is able to do exceeding abun dantly abov.j all 'toe ask" or think. Is it any wonder the devil trem bles? Is it any wonder the devil Jumps right into the midst of the church which is trying to do the will of God and works hard to create dis cord?. Yes, we are talking about tho devil. We are not talking about the dress parade of the white robed, glorified saints in Heaven. We are trying to picture the battle on earth where those saints prove that they will be worthy of the white robes. A battle means an organized force fighting a real enemy. Yes, the dev il is as real as God is real. The fight Is on, right vs. wrong; truth vs. er ror; salvation vs. damnation; Heav en vs. hell. Satan has mobilized bis triple alliance, the world, the flesh and the devil, and by his cunning wiles, he becomes the great deceiv er, teh liar and father of lies. And. alas, poor silly mankind must each one for himself try it out with the old serpent. In conscience, philoso phy, invention and all lines of busi ness, we believe and profit by the ex perience of our predecessors. Why don't we take, warning from our fa thers and avoid the machinations of satan instead of each one for him self starting down In the kindergar ten department to try all the tricks of the devil? God says, "Put on the whole arm or of God." Don't leave any part off. Don't leave any piece unfasten ed. There is not a single piece for the back no provision for a coward. Stand firm and fight. Fight a great er battle than flesh and blood, dread- naught, torpedo or aeroplane.- Fight the war of eternity for soul salva tion. The armor is unsurpassed. (1) The girdle of truth, "Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee." Our Savior won out in His 40 days temptation with satan by quoting scripture, God's word is truth. (2) Righteous ness as a breastplate. Our lives guided by the truth of God's word will follow In the way which Is right or the path of righteousness. (3) The prepraatlon of the gospel of peace. Every loyal soldier of the cross will proclaim the good news message as far as he can. (4) The shield of faith will ward off all fiery darts such as scepticism, doubts, Jealousies or worries. (5) The hel met of salvation is the crown which signifies that we are pledged to the Lord forever. All these parts are defensive. But the Christian Is not to stand still and let satan shoot at him Just to prove that his armor is invulnerable. He has a work to do, so God gives him the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God and, (we will call it the spear) prayer, by which weapons he Is to carry on ag gressive warfare with the full assur ance of ultimate victory. Secretary Iiane, of Interior Depart ment, Announces Substantial lrogrea In Classification Secretary Lane announces that during July, 1914, the first month of the new fiscal year, substantial pro gress has been made In the work of classifying the lands of the public domain. The coal land withdrawals have been reduced during this month by nearly 7,0000 acres, which have been classified and restored to entry. The states principally affected are Montana, Washington, and Idaho, with restorations, respectively, of about 10,000, 45,900, and 13,900 ac res. There have been no additional coal land withdrawals during the month. . The phosphate withdrawals in Ida ho and Wyoming were also substan tially reduced during the month. Re storations of 19,000 acres were ef fected in Idaho and of about 260, 000 acres in Wyoming. An addi tional withdrawal of somewhat less than 6,000 acres was also made In the former state. The net result Is to reduce the Idaho phrosphate withdrawals to somewhat less than 990,000 acres and the Wyoming phosphate withdrawals to somewhat less than 1,294,000 acres. A small restoration, amounting to 2,880 ac res of land heretofore included In potash reserves in California, was also promulgated, The water power reserves were increased during the month by near ly 40.000 acres, the principal with drawals being one of 38,000 acres In Idaho and one of 6,000 acres in Washington. At the same time a re duction of 2,000 acres was made In Montana reserves and of nearly 1, 500 acres In those of Idaho. The net result of the month's clas sification work has been a reduction of the total withdrawn area by 306, 150 acres, the present total area in cluded in outstanding withdrawals being a little more than 60,246,000 acres The situation as to all lands In cluded In mineral reserves was ma terially and favorably affceted by the approval by President Wilson on July 17, 1914, of a law which per mits agricultural entry on lands con taining phosphate, nitrate, potash, oil, gas, cr asphaltlc minerals, with a reservation to the United States of the mineral deposits contained Id the lands. A similar law affecting coal lands has been in force since July, 1910. with the result that the 50, 000,000 acres included in coal land withdrawals are all subject to agri cultural entry. The new law opens to nonmlneral entry the majority of the remaining withdrawn lands, so that now only those included in wa ter power, reservoir, and public wa ter reserves, amounting to substan tially less than 2,500,000 acres, are withheld from agricultural entry. The passage of this act has been urg ed by Secretary Lane in order that any Interference with the agricul tural development of the West that has accompanied the reservation of Its natural resources for public use might be reduced to the minimum. The enactment of the law is there fore a source of particular gratifi cation because it is one of the meas ures that will foster legitimate west ern development. The designation of lands for entry in double homesteads of 320 acres each under the so-called enlarged homestead act was continued thru- out the month. More than 844,000 acres were added during this period to lands which may be thus entered. Much the largest designation was in the state of Idaho where 731.000 ac res were opened by the secretary's order to this type of entry. North Dakota was also one of the benefic iaries of the act, during the month of July 113,000 acres in that state being rendered available for this type of entry. 218,250i,O0O Acres Open to Entry Secretary Lane has Just issued his usual monthly notice announcing the classification work of the Depart ment for the month of June. Dur ing this month somewhat more than 4,000,000 acres in the western pub lic land states were classified as nonlrrigable and were thus opened for entry under the 320-acre home stead act. Somewhat more than 12, 600,000 acres have been thus classi fied during the months of April, May and June constituting the fourth quarter of the fiscal year Just ended. During the same period more than 8,000,000 acres previously classified under this act were eliminated from the areas available for entry either because ,they had been erroneously designated or had been Included in Indian reservations or forest reserv es extended over them since their original designation. At the end of the month of June the total area of western lands made subject to this type of entry by the orders of the secretary amounts to over 218,250,- 000 acres. During June the areas withdrawn from entry because included in coal, phosphate, potash, water-power, or public water reserves, were reduced by 851.431 acres, leaving the total outstanding withdrawals at the end of the month a little more than 60, 500.000 acres. The principal res torations during the month were 380.000 acres in Montana, 330.000 acres In Wyoming, 48,000 acres in Utah, and 53,000 acres in Idaho. All these lands had been Included In coal withdrawals. Public water reserves aggregated 1440 acres in New Mexi co and 3960 acres in Wyoming were created during the month. Water power withdrawals were made in Idaho to the extent of 6.840 acres. Of the 60.500.000 acres now in eluded In reserves of one type or anotner 60,600.000 are in coal land withdrawals and are subject to agri cultural entry with a reservation of the coal content to the government Four million six hundred thouaand acres are included in oil land with drawals, 1,840,000 in phosphate withdrawals and a little less than 2.009,000 in water-power reserves.
