For one whole hour once I was
the chief of the dog catchers of our
town. Think of the honor, the pow
er, and the "pull" which It gives one.
Why, I made $5 in that hour no
wonder our dog catchers often die
millionaires.
It was my first year on a paper.
and one day the editor told me to go
to the rtaln, and obtain an Interview
with one of the wealthiest men In
the world, whom we will call P. J.
Horgan.
Mr. Horgan had a world-wide fame
for eluding the newspaper men, and
as It was my Brpt real interview, I
was a little nervous. Several other
reporters and I boarded P. J. 'a train
at a tank station about twenty miles
from our town, but It was no use
seeking an interview, because he
was too well guarded.
On arrivin gat our town Mr. Hor
gan stepped out of hla car sheathed
in robes, to avoid photographers,
and surrounded by guards to pro
tect him from "those damm newspa
per men as he called us.
At the hotel, we tried the phone
game, house doctor game and brib
ing, also the fire escapes, but it was
useless, as they were wise to all the
old tricks of newspaperdom.
Suddenly I had an inspiration.
Walking along the lobby was a mes
senger boy. with P. J.'s dog, the only
thing that he ever worried about.
Then the play began:
Scene 1. Messenger boy ties dog
to chair, goes to cigar stand for cig
arettes, comes back, dog has vanish
ed. Exit.
Scene 2. Small boy has message
to P. J. Will only deliver it to him.
Does bo. P. J. reads: "Sir May I
see you personally about your dog?
Must see you, as law requires it.

PAUL JONES.
Chief Dog Catcher."

P. J. H. "I see that you have
found my clog, and I suppose that
you have some municipal law or
something that makes you have to
see the owner?"
P. J. (who is in overalls and does
not look much like a dog catcher)
"Yls, Sir, the law requires that Oi
should see him to his face, sir."
"All right, John, now that you
have seen me, can I do any more for
you?"
"No, sir, excipt that you might rec
ommend me to Mayor Riley, sir."
"I'm sorry, John, but I won't be
able to see the mayor, as I am leav
ing here tonight, but wait, I have got
to see his secretary about the Mexl
cola Oil Company, which I am organ
izing, and 1 will recommend him to
keep an eye on you. By the way,
you need not Bay anything to those
newspaper men when you go out.
They are a bad lot, damm 'em. Here
is a little present. John."
"Thankye, sir, much obliged, sir."
Scene 3. P. J. Horgan reading a
letter: "Sir Thanks for your kind
assistance to a 'cub' It was with
great pleasure that my editor learn
ed that it was you who was forming
the Mexicola Oil Company, and it is
too bad that you leave us tonight.
"Thanks again for the scoop which
you helped me obtain. I am fram
ing the $5 bill.
