nual meeting of the Alliance rublio
Library board, held at the library,
Wednesday erening, June 3. Presi
dent J. II. II. Hewitt presided.
The following members responded
to rollcall:

and Messrs. Hewitt, Guthrie, Stern,
Mid Pate.
Minutes of previous meeting were
read and approved.
Bids for the construction of curb

motion made by Mrs. Rowan, second-

awarded to T. J. Beat, the lowest

Twenty-three story telling hours
during the year have been held since
May 1, 1911. 735 books have been
given to the library, 453 purchased,
staking a total of 1,188.
186 books, worn out, have been
withdrawn from circulation, 21 lost
and carried away, 10 being paid for
amounting to $8.00. 29 have been
destroyed in quarantine, 9 of which
were paid for, amounting to $5.26,
money turned over to the treasurer
with the fines.
We have at present time 2,179
books in the library, 17 in circula
tion over-due, 19 periodicals, 1 daily
paper, 3 weekly papers.
Total $120.22
Mrs. Nellie Wilson was unanimous
ly re-elected librarian for the ensu
ing year.

Hums for Superintendent
Prof. G. M. Burns of the Central
school filed papers Tuesday morning
for nomination for county superin
tendent on the republican ticket.
Prof. Burns ran for the same office
seven years ago and was defeated by
a small margin. He began school
work in Alliance nine years ago. He
was hero ell of that time excepting
three years spent at Marsland. For
the last four years he has taken the
school census.
Starting Tuesday, Prof. Burns be
gan taking a census of the town of
Alliance and the Alliance school dis
trict. This Is for the city and the
school toard. The census will in
clude everyone in Alliance and the
school district,- with their addrebses.
Prof. Burns has been in western
Nebraska school work for many
years and has a wide acquaintance.
Miss Mayme White, who filed last
week, is the only other candidate for
the place.
Ton of Paper Used
This issue of The Herald takes
1840 pounds of print paper, nearly
a ton. Tne Herald s cylinder press
has been busy since Monday, turn
ing out the sheets of paper which
are afterwards folded and trimmed.
Many Sales on Dollar Day
Alliance merchants who offered
special bargains on last Saturday,
"Dollar Day", report a total of 1193
bargains sold. This is a good rec
ord for the first day of this kind.

The board of County Commissioners
met pursuant to adjournment; offic
ers present C. L. Hashman, chair
man, S. C. Reck, and J. M. Wanek.
The following claim was examined

611 head of cattle were branded
at the Alliance stock yards in four
hours the first of the week, making
a record. The cattle were part of a
shipment of seventeen cars consign
ed from Florida to R. M. Schway, the
big Wyoming cattle man at Sheridan.
Harry Leach, his foreman, was in
charge of the shipment.
Illg Cattle Business
Feagins & Son, the Alliance Gtock
dealers, report an active movement
in cattle. Recent sales are 200 head
to J. Taylor at Whitman, 35 cows to
Dr. W. M. Lee, 40 head of heifers to
the Thompson Cattle Company, and
150 head to the Beach ranch.
