GERMANY HAS

to
Berlin, Germany, March 17 Cut
tle raiBera in Germany art eagerly
awaiting a decision by the govern
ment as to the merits of the cure
for foot and inouth disease annaunc
ei recently by Prof. Ludwlg Urieger,
a eVMlntrulshed German scientist,
and his assistant. Dr. II. Krause. The
remedy in called typosafrol, and is a
derivative of saffron.
Il it administered easily by mix

drl .L. The formula has not been
ma public, however aud there is a
dlv"".on of opinion as to whether an
effective check has been discovered
for this cattle plague, which costs
Stockmen all over the world millions
f dollars annually.
As previously reported, il is claim
ad that 290 bead of cattle were suc
cessfully treated and members of
the relchstsg have asked the govern
ment to Investigate tb rmdy, with a
view to acquiring control of it if ef
fective and furnishing it to cattle
raisers at cost.
Professor Urieger, who also re
cently announced a new method of
treating sleeping sickness, is one of
a large band of Investigators' who
have been giving their attention to
the foot and mouth disease germ,
whose identity was only recently es
tablished by a Swiss scientist. Dr.
Urieger believes that his discovery
may not only be effective against the
foot and mouth disease, but against
other germs, to which the blood of
cuttle is subject. If only his claims
as to the former are borne out, how
ever, that cure alone will be suffici
ent to confer a real boon to humanity
for the disease has been one of the
great factors in the hluh prices for
meal.
A widespread epidemic of the dis
ease occurred in 1850; 4.000,000 cat
tle were affected in 199 and 1,000.
000 in 1900, notwithstanding the
most rigid Quarantine measures and
the slaughter of whole herds of ani
mals. And three years ago the pm
again swept throuah the empire.
Great numbers of farms are still in
fected. The disease has even become a fac
tor in politics, furnishing the basis
for a Kreat conflict, furnishing the
basis for a great conflict between the
government and the agrarians on the
one hand and the Socialists, Radicals
and other representatives of the mid
dle and industrial classes on the oth
er. The latter assert that the regu
lations closing the frontier to all for
eign livestock are absurd, in view of
the fact that the herds of Germany
are more extensively affected than
those of most of the countries from
which Importation is possible, and
that t.'ie bars are kept up merely to
let the landowners get high prices
ror tueir meat.
