    KNIGHTS CELEBRATE
Large Number of Candidates Initiated
Into Order of Knights of Columbus
on Sunday Followed by Feed
Alliance was the roecca for many
visitors Sunday to the entertainment
given by the Knights of Columbus.
The banquet was held at the Oadsby
Hall at 6:30 o'clock yesterday even
tug. The musical program was as

HIS MIND
ftcottsbluff Woman Comes to Alli
ance to Wed but Changes Mind
Before Time Set Arrives
A young ranchman living near
Scottsbluff, accompanied by a hand
Some young woman, arrived In Alli
ance Saturday noon and stopped at
one of the local hotels. In the af
ternoon the young man, who was
twenty-five years of age, went to the
county judge's office and secured a
marriage license. The woman also
gave her age as twenty-five years.
The time for the marriage cere
mony was set for 7:30 o'clock, and
the groom-to-be went ahead with the
reparations. But at 7:15, just fif
teen minutes before the time set,
he changed her mind and absolutely
refused to go ahead as per axrango
entB. The man begged and begged but
to no avail. The woman had chang
ed her mind and would not listen to
his pleadings. He finally gave up
and returned the license to the
judge. The couple were compelled
to stay in town until this noon, when
they took the train back to their
homes.

Interesting Items of Bustling West

The Woodmen of the World will
give a dance and supper here on the
18th of this month. They will have
first class music and extend a cor
dial invitation to all.
Jerry Florian of Whitman came
down to wrestle one of our local
wreBtlers, Walter Holiday. Florian;
was an easy winner, taking the first
fall in five minutes flat, and the sec
ond In three minutes and one-half.
Mrs. James Oliver, who has been
visiting her daughter at Calloway for
the past six weeks, returned home
Thursday of this week.
James Oliver was a Grand Island
visitor for a couple of- days this
week, returning this morning.
Richard McKinney, who has been
in charge of the postoffice here for
the past four years, has resigned his
position and is on his way to Iowa,
where be will make his home.
Ernest Tschauder departed today
for Dunning, where he will take a
position with the Burlington railroad.
E. J. Beckemeyer of Seneca was
a Mullen visitor Saturday.
Ross A. Hill, who for the past
two years has been professor of the
Mullen schools but who recently ac
cepted a position with, the Internat
ional' Harvester Co., is in the city on
business for two or three days.
About twenty-five from here at
tended the Home Day at Hyannls on
Thursday. All report having a good
time.
There are a few frowns worn by
the citizens of Mullen over the re
sult of the world series but where
there Is one frown there are twenty
smiles. The report of each half-inning
was received here by John J.
Motl. There was a large crowd
watching the board.
NEW BRIDGEPORT POSTMASTER
J. G. Porter of Bridgeport was la
Alliance a few hours today, on his
way to Lincoln, where he went to
attend the Grand Lodge of Nebraska
I. O. O. F. He went east on belat
ed 44. While In this city he favored
The Herald with a pleasant call. Mr.
Porter had recently received notice
uf his appointment as postmaster at
Bridgeport, a position which he will
undoubtedly fill to the satisfaction of
the patrons of the offioe. He ex
pects to receive his commis3ion
voon.
MISSOURIAN LOOKING FOR LAND
R. M. Sloan of Carthage, Mo., hav
ing heard of the advantages of north
western Nebraska as a place for real
estate investment, arrived in Alliance
yesterday and want out in the coun
try today looking at land. The Her
aid is glad to welcome men of this
kind to our city and country men
who will invest money in land and
improve and develop it.
While the senate was passing the
tariff measure It might have put a
prohibitive duty on the relmporta
tion of Harry Thaw. .
