Reduced Acreage The prevalence of potato lisa-e has greatly reduced the acreage of potatoes In Colorado and parts of Ne braska. It is probable nln tliit the low priei ; of the pant y ar will have a tendetv to discourage potato planting In other sections of tb Mid dle West. If It. works out In this way, prlct thould be hotter next f ason and this should be a good year to grow potatoes. Increased Yields Whether or not it Is wise to In crease the acreage in potatoes this year, it will certainly pay to Increase tlx yield per acre. i'his can be don by planMrg GOOD SEED, on GOOD SOIL, and giving the crop t.OUl) l akk, Home-grown Seed Not Satisfactory Good seed Is the moat Important single lUm iu potato culture. For c niral, southern, and eastern Ne braska, home-grown potatoes are not satisfactory for seed unless speciul methods ure employed in their pro duction. The hot soil of this region causes rapid loss of vigor. At the Nebraska Experiment Station the de terioration of homegrown potatoes ranged from about 20 per cent the first year lo 60 per cenjt the sei etith year. Northern-grown 8eed Pays In these hum lions of tire Utte, northern-grown seed potatoes should be planted. Such seed usually costs a 'bout 25 per centl more than home grown seed, but. the increase In yield from Its use makes It worth fully 100 p r cent more than home grown seed. Mulched Seed Potatoes Potatoes grown In the cool soil un d r a mulch of straw produce as vig orous plants and as large crops as northern seed and can he produced at home at a cost per bushel littl In excess of the cost of ordinary homegrown tubers. Select Smooth, Well-shaped Tubers Whatever the source of seed po tatoes, nothing but smooth, firm, sound tubers of good shape should be planted. At the Experiment. Sta tion such need has yielded about till per cent more than elongated, knotty tubers of the same stock. Wilted or sprouted seed tubers produce weak f plants and poorer yields than the 1 d tubers that have been kejii iu good condition. Potato Breeding By selecting seed every fall from hills that produce large yields of uni form tubers, a high yielding strain of potutoes can be produced in a few years, , Dry Reft The dry rot la caused by a fungus that enters the tuber thru wounds. During the winter the rot makes rapid progress and this renders stor age very dangerous and unprofitable in many cases. All rotted tubers should be discarded and the balance disinfected before they are placed In the cellars or pits. Stem Rot The fungus in this disease attacks the stem at or near the surface of the ground and results In the com plete rdtting off of the stein or In a greater or lesser rotting of the cortical portion of the stem. In any case the resulting stand la seriously reduced. The fungus sinters over In the form of small raised dark specks on the surface of the tubers. These specks are the resting bodies of the fungus. Leaf Curl The exact cause of this disease is not yet known The symptoms In clude (a) an upward curling of the leaves lengthwise, (b) a compact growth of the top to form a sort of rosette, and (c) the production of Ullle potatoes at or near the sur face of the soil or at other places on the stem, even at some distance above the surface of te soil. Blackleg This Is a bacterial dUxts Jhat ha been introduced into various parts of Nebraska, no doubt thru the pur chase of Infecetd t.-ed.
