REV. GEO. A. WITTE
The dally papers throughout the
country have been publishing scarce
articles on the recent Issue by the
Ann t it an linptls Publication Socie
ty of what they are pleased to call
the "Haptist Hible". As there aeeras
to be a good deal of misunderstand
ing about this whole matter, even on
the part of Intelligent members of
our own denomination, a brief state
ment of the facts in the case ap
pears to be necessary. These facts
are substantially as follows:
The American Bible Union under
took the revision of the Hible more
than sixty years ago. The revisers
of the union, under the leadenhlp of
Dr. Thos. J. Conant, completed the
translation or revision of the New
Testament (first published in Its en
tirety in 1865) and Issued transla
tions dt the OM Testament books Of
iknesis. Job, I'salms and Proverbs.
In 1883. after years of discussion and
difficulty, the Hible convention at
Sar;Uoga, X. Y., called for the pur
pose of settling the controversy and
making plans for the future Bible
work of the denomination, transfer
red that work, so far as this coun
try was concerned, to the 'American
Baptist Publication Society. One of
the conditions of this transfer was
that the Publication Society should
complete the revision of the entire
Bible, provided special funds were
glvenfor that purpose. Such tunds
were Tglven, and the Publication So
ciety began Its work in 1884. The
N'ew Testament was placed in the'
hands cf Dr. Weston, Proadus und J
Hovey for the further revision, and j
was reissued in 1881. In 1889 ar
rangements were made for the re-1
vision of the Old Testament. To'
Dr. B. C. Taylor, of Crozer Semin
ary, was given the revision of the
portions of the Old Testament Issued
by the Bible Union, and the transla
tion of Exodus, Judges. Ruth and
First and Second Samuel. To Prof.
I, H. Sampey, of the Southern Hap- I
tist Theological Seminary, was given
the translation of the remainder of
the historical books, and P.eclesia-
les, Song of Solomon and lamenta-
tions. Pres. Wm. R. Harpt r, of the !
r . a
I nivtrslty of Chicago, undertook the
translation of Isaiah and the Minor
I'rophetB, and Prof. Ira If. Price, of
'lie same Institution, assumed the
task- of translating Jeremiah and
Kjeklel.
This translation cr revision is a
faithful rendering of the original He
brew and Oreek ipto uiiomatic Kng
lish. . The utmost pains have heea
taken to give a most accurate and
r(ear translation of the i xact words
ct the sa.red writers. The absurd
divisions of the chapters into verseas,
the headlines of chapters, the guess
es in chronology which occur in King
James Version, have ull been omitted
from the "Baptist Bible". These
were the works of men. Poetry has
been printed as poetry, to show tl.
literary form. Every intelligent per?
-on knows that the italics in King
James Vemlcn are not meant to etn
nh tsie words, but. on the contrary,
o 'adit ate that there are no words
ia th II -brew and Greek of the Old
Rod Ni V Testaments answering to
li italicized words. In cases
wli -n it lias been necessary to sup-
words to cc.uplete the s lie lu
the transfer from Hebrew or Greek
idiom into Knarlinh such supplied
words have been bracketed.
It is time thai I he people neiieral-
4y were emancipated from the ignor-
ne that believts that King Janiea
Version dropped down out of heaveu,
I the Mormons falsely claim that
M If "Golden Bible" did. The plea
lia i the English of King James Ver
clM is vtrbally inspired is arrant
lonsense. and has made pious fools
.r many lovers oi the Bible That
aoble translation is only a revision
of previously existing translations,
mid was made by men who did a
glorious work They gave us our
tlneajt English classic, ami a transla
tion that was remarkable for the
year 1611. Its eaccllemcs, however,
should not blind us to the fan th.it
in ::tin years we bav- leariutl far
more lhau its revisers knew about
both She Hebrew and (ireek tnana
scripts of the Bible, that we have n
much greater equipment for accurate
tr.tnH.ttft n of the Bible than these
revisers pontes!.
Of course, this idltlon is not a
"Mnptiat Plble" any more than the
Standard lit vlsl n, the King fata,
the Unurtv, or any other revision, Is
a "Haptist Bible". Thnt the transla
tion or revision has been done by
Haptist scholars, and issued by a
Baptist publishing hoiiMe, tu no way
makes U a "Baptist Bible", neither
tlops it affect the rendering of the
original text. Baptists have reason
for gratitude and pride that they
have among them men competent to
flTe the world a conipli te and faith-I
fill remit ring of the cut in- Bible and
faert means of Issuing it in printed
form, but they can lay no claim to
liming done anything more In this
work than to transfer from one lan

That simple remedies are best has
