THE WORKINGMAN
AND THE 8AL00N
John B. Lannon, Treasurer of the;
American Federation of Labor
l have worked In the factories,
mills and mines of this country for
many long years, and have seen the
effect of the liquor traffic upon the
security of the workingmnn's em
ployment. In all legitimate occupa
tions the totinl abstainer lias had the
preference, for he can be relied up
on to be at Ink work when he is
expected, and not spend one-third or
or.e half of the first part of each
week in getting over the influence
of a drunken carousal. The railroad
companies will not employ an engin
eer or I conductor that frequents the
saloon, and in many other industrial
walks the same rule obtains. Every
one backs such corporations up in
this stand, awl the workingmen are
beginning to realize- what such a
practice means to them. When they
fully appreciate the situation there
. ill be an absolute end to the liquor
.n'fflc.
TRUE MEANING OF
"PERSONAL LIBERTY"
Archbishop Ireland
The claim of saloon-keepers to
freedom in their traffic is the claim
Us spread disease, sin and pauperism.
Education, the elevation of the
masses liberty all that the age ad
mires is set at nauglit by this
dreadful evil. The Individual con
science is the first am In opposing
it, but the Individual conscience has
to be strengthened an J supplement
ed by law.

EDITOR RECEIVES A GEM
Monotony of Editorial Work Reliev
ed by Variety
Hi.nn- may think tliut the edltcr'u
lot is an easy one; that he has no
thing o do but to recline on a bed
of rose. Hut occasionally there is
a thorn. There are many pleasant
things connected with publishing the
local paper but some unpleasant ex
periences are unavoidable, but the
unpleiusant thUigs often ltae a ludic
rous aide that gives the editor a
chance to have a little fun, even out
of the things that usually annoy him.
The publishers of the Norfolk
Press received the following letter
last week, dated January . and in
stead of getting angry about It,
takes It good-naturedly, calls kt a
"literary gem", and publishes it, o
