A. P. LEE, Mgr.
1 AM the lad that makes you glad. When
1 am late you're awful mad. You make
things hum and say, "By gum, why don't
that pesky paper come?" You know you
do, but if you knew how tough it is the
whole year through to buck the line in rain
or shine you'd say, "That boy's a friend of
mine." I am your friend, year's end to
end, and, hoping this may not offend,
I beg to say it's New Year's day and turn
about, you know, 's fair play. Be good to
me and you will see I'll practice reciprocity.
Don't miss that word. Tis one 1 heard
election time. It is a bird. It means you've
got my tender spot and henceforth I'll be
on the dot. Though rains may pour and
blizzards roar, I'll be on time forevermore.
AT break of day Ym on my way, while
other folks are n? the hay. I have my
eyes upon the prize that makes men healthy,
wealthy, wise. I can affirm I have the germ
of early birds that catch the worm. I'm on
the run before the sun has got his coat and
trousers on. The dewdrop's gem that decks
the hem of Night I see at 4 a. m. The
hens that scratch the garden patch, I'm up
before them all to snatch a bite and chase
my 4 papes" a race before the Day has
washed her face. Of afternoons I whistle
tunes as I distribute daily boons of joy and
mirth and news whose girth takes in the an
nals of the earth, the page whose plan
holds one day's span from out the history
of man.
I'M on the street in hail and sleet, in win
ter's cold and summer's heat. I'm on
the go through slush and snow, when thun
ders crash or tempests blow. Thus I divest
myself of rest and for a pittance, at the best,
to bring to you the story new of what your
brothers think and do. Through sea and
air the currents bear the tidings out of every
where. O'er bound and bar, from near
and far, they waft the tale of things that
are. Like bees, they store from every shore
the news of progress, peace and war, and
you receive this feast they leave before you
every morn and eve. The presses tell life's
chronicle. I, as their herald, wish you well.
Your newsboy small gives with this call a
happy New Year to you all!
