ple's Independent Party Should Take
in Settling Pending Controversy Ef
fort to Indorse Republican Nominee
Meets Strong Opposition.
Lincoln, Sept 20. At the meeting
of the Populist committee this after
noon, called to select a nominee for
governor in place of Governor Shallen-
berger, who declined to abide by the
result of the primary which gave him
the nomination, there will be a strong
effort made to secure the Indorsement
of C. H. Aldrich, candidate on the Re
publican ticket. There will also be
mnde a vigorous fight against such
action.
At a gathering of Republican candi
dates at the hendquarters the matter
was discussed informally and it was
the general opinion that if the nomi
nation Is offered the Republican can
didate he would do well to accept.
The roint was raised that if Aldrich
should accept the Populist nomination
his action would work to tho hurt of
other candidates on the Republican
ticket, inasmuch as a straight Populist
vote cast In the Interest of Aldrich
would be a vote for fio other Demo
cratic candidates, while a straight
Democratic vote cast in the Interest of
Dahlman would also count for the
other Democratic candidates.
This point, however, had little
weight with some of the friends of
Senator Aldrich, who desire him to be
the Populist nominee, while a number
of the candidates believe it will be
the best thing for the Republican
ticket if Aldrich is nominated by the
Populists.
It was also urged against a Populist
nomination of Aldrich that the Re
publican rarty has fought fusion for
years and that If the two parties fuse
on governor, then many of the Repub
licans will not vote the ticket be
cause of the Populist indorsement.
