Alliance Teachers

Letter from Former Superintendent
Hayes Gives Interesting News.
Peru, Nebr., Aug. 7, 1910.
Dear Mr. Thomas. Doubtless you have
noticed in the state papers that Mr. Meyer
of Peru has been awarded the silver cup
oflered by Omaha for the champion tennis
player ot Nebraska and that Mr. G H.
Williams won second place A peculiar
interest to Alliance people attaches itself
to this, inasmuch as Mr. Meyer and Mr.
Williams will both be in the high school
faculty next year in Alliance and both of
them were reared in Peru, receiving their
tennis training on the fine tennis courts
maintained here, while they were In school
at the Normal. A great interest was
shown in tennis at Peru this summer, and
much of this interest was due to the lead
ership of Mr. Williams, Mr. Ilanna, and
Mr. Meyer.
Peru is giving much attention to clean
athletics, and more emphasis will be placed
on this phase of school work next year
than ever before Physical training direc
tors of exceptional skill in that lino of
work, in both men's and women's depart
ments, are employed to direct these de
partments. Lest you might conclude that other de
partments are not as well represented in
l'eru, will say briefly, The Peru State
Normal has a faculty of nearly 50 mem
bers. It enrolls 5,100 students annually.
Graduates from the advanced course from
150 to 180 each year.
It offers all the regular courses leading
to the various grades of state certificates,
life diploma and degree of llachelor of
Education. Also many special courses,
as agriculture, domestic science, shorthand
and typewriting, business principles and
commerce, art, physical culture and gym
nastics, library training, music; including
piano, violin and stringed instruments,
orchestra and band instruments, voice;
elocution, debating, parliamentary law,
etc., etc.
The low cost of attending school at Peru,
the beautiful environment of the school
with its removal from the haunts of vice,
make it a desirable place in which to re
ceive professional training, and have in
duced hundreds of young men and women
to come to Peru.
In spite of the large graduating classes,
we are unable to supply the demand for
professionally trained men and women to
take charge of the various grade positions,
principalships of ward schools, villiage
schools and high schools, and citv super
intendences. We shall be pleased to
hear from any of the young people who are
desirous of securing a better education, or
from teachers who want to prepare for
more advanced work.
1910-11 catalog will be sent to any who
request it. Cordially yours,
D. W. HAYES.
W. M. Robinson, 'manager of the
Bennett Piano Company, Omaha,
with branch store in Alliance, was in
town Sunday and Monday of this wrek.
While here Mr. Robinson made a tiip
to his farm west of lierea which he has
been improving this year. Mr. Robin
son covers the state thoroughly quite
often and he stated to The Herald re
porter that liox Butte county todny is
in better condition than any
other
portion of Nebraska. lie has every
confidence in this country and is adding
new improvements to the farm right
along, the latest being a new barn and
implement shed.
Do you expect to start an orchard or
plant some shade trees next season?
This week's issue of The Herald has a
Very interesting article on "Method of
Planting and Canug for Trees" by J,
P. Barger, the Box Butte county
nurseryman. Read the article and
file the paper. It will be valuable
later. .
Bayard, Nebiaska, is keeping up
with the times and that little munici
pally is taking up the question of
electric lights and water woiks. The
town is now entirely without fire pro
lection and kerosene and gasoline lights
are the prevailing fashion. Bayaid is
paid to be exceptionally well favored
for the installation of water works on
account of the high hills close to the
town on which the reservoir cquld be
located and which would give the water
good force.
Many people say that trees cannot
be giow n in Box Butte county. Read
the article in this week's issue by J. P.
Barger. Perhaps it gives the reason
for it. www.
Broken Bow is now constructing an
electric light plant. This is owned by
a private company which has been
promising them light for a long time,
