Celebrates Advent
of Railroad
The heretofore "inland" town of
Thermopolis, Vvo., is now reached by
the Big Horn extension of the Burling
ton railroad. Of course the people of
that town and surrounding country
were greatly delighted upon the advent
of railroad trains, and recently held a
rousing celebration in honor of the
event. Bishop Keane of the Cheyenne
diocese was one of the speakers. The
following extract from his address will
be interesting to persons who want to
see the great west developed:
"The question was not what it might
cost, but 'Is it at all possible, with
barren mountain ranges, defiant bar
riers, and abysmal canons standing out
challenging every re6ourse The ap
parently Impossible is accomplished,
ond we are here to celebrate the tri
umph, The Railroad has been the
clvilizer of Western America. I was a
young man when central Minnesota
was the frontier of civilization to the
North and West; now thousands of
the happiest homes in the world deck
the productive claims through the en
tire Northwest. Economical conditions
may need reform, but this cannot be
brought about by encouraging mis
apprehension regarding fundamental
truths or principles and by ignoring
the facts of life. Private property is
as necessary to the full ideal of human
personality and to development ns is
individual liberty. We have actual
pressing needs. We want the Hurling
ton, the Northwestern, and the Union
Pacific to build on, and open the way.
Let us be honest; let us realize that
this building of the Burlington, like
those we have hope for, are great ven
tures, ehtailiug much risk. The pro
moters of such enterprises should be
regarded with popular sympathy and
encouraged by an assurance their
rights will be respected."

Correspondence ) Governor Shallcn
bcrgcr has decided not to call a special
session of the legislature for tho pur
pose of submitting an initiative and
referendum amendment to tho constitu
tion to tho voters of Nebraska. The
Governor Is actuated by several rea
sons. First, the failure of those who
promised to have enough pledges from
members of the legislature to insure
the passage of the bill. Second, it
would be impossible now to call the
legislature into special session and
have the bill passed in time to' have it
printed on tne primary ballots and in
this wise get it on the regular ballot so
as to secure for It tho votes of all those
who vote a "straight ticket." Without
this it has been demonstrated that it is
impossible to secure the adoption of an
amendment. Third, it would be nec
essary to call special elections in four
legislative districts to fill vacancies,
thus entailing heavy expense. Lastly
the expense of an extra session would
be enormous, nnd while Governor Shal
lenberger would very much like to se
cure the initiative and referendum
during his administration, he does not
feel that the situation warrants the ex
pense and the turmoil of an extra
session at this time.
Victor Wilson of Polk is being prom
inently mentioned in c6nnection with
the democratic nomination for state
treasurer. Mr. Wilson has not yet
decided to be a candidate, but he has
many friends who are urging him to do
so.
Superintendent Arnot of the Schuyler
schools and formerly county superin
tendent of Dodge county, is said to be
preparing to file for the democratic
nomination as state superintendent.
Prof. J. W. Crabtree, formerly super
intendent of the Peru Normal, has an
nounced that he will be a republican
candidate for the nomination-' atr-statc
superintendent.
