IV.- The Modern Science
of Incubation.
By MILO M. HASTINGS,
Formerly Poultrymnn At Kansas Experi
ment Station, Commercial Poultry Ex
pert of the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture, Author
of "Tho Dollar Hen."
Copyright, 1010, by American Press Asso
ciation. mRTIFIOlAL Incubation has been
m practiced In Egypt and by the
M Ik Chinese for several thousand
years, but has been developed
In thla country only within tho mem-
ory of the present generation.
Because of the great extent to which
Incubators havo been advertised, tho
large circulation of poultry books put
out by incubntormanufacturcrs and tho
favornblo views of tho poultry papers,
which get their chief support from in
cubator advertisements, the general
Impression Is that artificial Incubation
Is a greater Improvement over the nat
ural method Of lintchliiq thuti Is In
reality tho case.
Hens or Incubators,
One of the chief claluis of ibe arti
ficial Incubation is that by tills means
chicks cnu be produced at any season
of the year, whereas hens brood only
In the spring and suuiuii'i This ad
vantage, is not great, however, us most
inexperienced people believe, for chick
ens hatched In the winter are tlllllcult
to rear, aud because of the evening up
of prices due to cold storage, as re
ferred to in a previous lesson, the use

of incubators for hatching winter
chicks is not particularly profitable.
The second Important advautago
claimed for incubators Is that of sav
ing labor, or, In other words, they en
able one person to hatch a much larger
number of chicks than would bo pos
sible with the use of hens. This claim
is worthy of consideration. It Is, In
fact, the chief reason why Incubators
have gained their prcssnt standing.
As to the percentage of hatching
and tho vitality of the chicks, the aver
age Incubator, especially in the bands
of the novice, will haidly equal the
natural methods. The writer made an
extensive study of tho results obtnlned
with Incubators by Kansas farmers.
The results showed that about as many
farmers failed with Incubators as suc
ceeded with them.
The percentage of eggs that hatch
cither in incubators or with hens Is
commonly overestimated. The extraor
dinary hatches at poultry shows nre
usually arranged by setting two incu
bators and testing, out the live eggs
Just before hatching nnd putting them
in the one machine. A GO per cent
hatch of all eggs set for the season is
good enough. Many very large and
successful poultry farms have lower
averages. The advisability of purchas
ing nn Incubator will depend upon many
circumstances. All those who breed
Leghorns will require Incubators. With
the Plymouth Rocks, Wyandottes or
Rhode Island Reds I should favor
hatching with hens until the poultry
work grows to such size that this be
comes impractical
Eggs For Hatching.
There are many superstitious no
tions prevalent regarding the relation
of the shape of an egg to its vitality
aud the sex of the forthcoming chick
en. Such notions have no ground in
fact. Eggs having weak shells that
might become broken in the nest or
unusually small eggs should be dis
carded. If there nre more eggs availa
ble thau we wish for n sitting It will be
better to select the fresher eggs than
to be overparticular about shape and
appearance. The eggs for hatching
should be stored In a cool, dry location
and shifted or rolled about occasion
ally. Eggs exposed to freezing tempera
ture If not actually frozen may still
retain their vitality, but It Is generally
considered best to keep them at a tem
perature between 40 and 70 degrees.
If kept too warm eggs dry out rapid
ly and will not bold their vitality, A
good rule 13 not to set eggs over two
weeks old. The idea that Jarring, ns
by thunder, will injure the batching
of essfn Is without foundation; like
wise the ndvico to let eggs rest after
shipping has been proved to be ground
less. Accommodations For Sitting Kens,
The convenience of the arrangement
for sitting hens has a great deal to do
with the success of the hatching. By
all means I should advise that a plnce
be provided for the Kitting hens away
from the general poultry bouse. This
may be in ji separate room or building,
where tiers of boxes are used for the
npsts nnd feed, wnter and dust wal
low provided In the room The nest
boxes ore open on the top, not on the
side, and a board Is laid loosely across
tliem to confine the hen The hens aro
set hi groups, so that those sitting ou
eggs which aro to hatch tho same
time mny bo given their liberty nt
once. Tho attendant has only to re
move tho board from the nest, lift off
tho bens and return In a hour to seo
lhat there Is a ben on each nest.
Another scheme for tho easy han
dling of sitting hens, the plans for
which have been largely sold, consists
In constructing n scries of outdoor
nests and runways mado by setting
foot wldo boards on edge about ono
foot apart The runways aro covered
with laths or netting except the ono In
which the nest is constructed, this
being protected from tho wenthor by
another wide board to form a roof.
Each hen thus has her individual nest
and a runway, in which tho hen may
exercise nnd dust herself to get rid of
lice. Old fruit cans aro used to pro
Tido food and water.
Such an arrangement for Bitting
hens reduces tho work of caring for
them to a minimum, and if tho nests
are well protected from tho weather
and tho ground where tho nests aro
located thrown up so that tho water
will not run In tho results aro usually
better than with hens set indoors. Tho
nests should be arranged so that hens
may bo shut on them when tho eggs
begin to hatch, or the restless hen will
frequently leavo tho nest with tho
first few chicks nnd allow tho others to
die in tho shell.
Essentials of a Good Incubator.
In the enso of artificial incubation
wo have n number of points to look
after that do not concern us when
hatching bens. The first to bo observ
ed Is uniform temperature 103 for all
eggs In the machine at all times. Tho
second consideration and one that
causes much more trouble in practlco
is to provldo Just sufficient circulation
of air of Just sufficient dryness to
cause the eggs to lose water by evap
oration nt the normal rato; othcrwlso
the body of tho chick will contain too
much water or not enough and dlo In
the shell or shortly after hatching.
The novice can do no better, as far as
this and other points of incubatlou aro
concerned, thau to follow the direc
tions of the maker of his machine.
Tho following discussion of the
points of a good Incubator are given
to lu'lp the poultrymnn in selecting a
machine or In deciding whether ho is
capable of handling tho problem ot
artificial Incubation successfully rath
er than for the purpose of teaching
him to ruu any particular incubator:
The case of the incubator should bo
built double or triple wall to with
stand variation In tho outsldo tempera
ture. Tho door should Ot neatly and
should be made of double glass. Tho
lamp, both bowl and chimney, should
be made of heavy metal material and
should have a wick sufficiently, wide
to maintain the temperature of tho
Incubator with a low blaze. Tho lamp
IS generally placed nt the end of the
machine, though thcro nre some good
incubators now made with the lamp
placed underneath the machine. Tho
heat Is got from the lamp to the eggs
by means of a circulation of hot air or
u tank of hot water. Tho hot air ma
chines seem to have proved most suc
cessful In practice, nnd the mojorlty
of well known makes arc now of that
type. It Is easier, however, to make
n cheap bot water machine that will
retain the beat than it is to make a
hot air machine. This is because tho
tank of hot water holds the beat
against sudden changes in outside tem
perature. Regulators composed of two metals,
ns aluminium nnd steel, are best Wu
fers filled with ether are mor6 sensi
tive, but weaker in action. Hard rub
ber bars are frequently used. The In
cubator needs no arrangement for
turning eggs, as this is not ns impor
tant a part of the operation as is fre
quently stated, and the eggs can be
rolled around readily with the hand

at the time the trays are taken out to
be turned end to end, a precaution
necessary to equalize any effects due
to different temperatures In the vari
ous parts of ttye machine. Cooling the
eggs, upon which many incubator
manufacturers lay considerable stress,
has never been proved to be of bene
fit A good thermometer Is essential
In running an incubator nnd Is best
laid face downward on top of the
eggs. Thermometers hung in n fixed
position above the eggs frequently fall
to register tho temperature of the eggs
themselves,
The best location for an Incubator Is
In the cellar. The more even In tem
perature this cellar Is kept the better
The cellar should not be so damp as
to warp the Incubator, but on the oth
er band, should not be entirely dry.
If there Is a furnace In tho cellar or It
Is In any way heated open water
should be exposed In a warm place
The ventilation of the cellar Is not ns
Important as Is ordinarily Imagined,
for chicks upod very little oxygen.
The Increased evaporation induced by
too much ventilation Is a greater evli
than lack of fresh air.
