ORDINANCE No. 143
An ordinance estabtiihlng the grades on
certain streets In the city ot Alliance,
Nebraska, with reference to a datum
plane and repealing all ordinances in
conflict herewith.
He it ordained by the Mayor aud Coun
cil ot the City ot Alliance:
Section I, That the grades ot certain
streets in the City ot Alliance, Nebr.,shall
be and the same are here by established in
reference to a datum piano, which is lo
cated as follows, to-wit: Bench mark on
S. W. corner of foundation of standpipeat
the intersection of Box Butte Ave. and
Colorado Street is 61. at foot above said
datum plane; also bench mark on the outer
edge of water table between the pilasters
on the North side of the N, E, corner of
the C. 13. & Q. It. R. passenger depot is
59.42 feet above said datum plane, said
datum plane being approximately 3900 feet
above mean sea level ot the Gull of Mex
ico, at Biloxi, Miss., the grades being uni
form straight lines between adjacent
points specified and are all above said
datum plane.

Barley for Bacon

Formerly corn was cheap and
hay was cheap, so that western
feeders had no particular prob
lem to profitably feed live stock
for the market. But conditions
have changed.
The surplus corn crop of Kan
sas and Nebraska is yearly be
coming less and. less, Corn
prices have risen until corn can
no longer be so lavishly used,
even in Kansas and Nebraska, .
where it always holds the cheap
est price.
Experiments made at the Neb
raska station showed that the
largest gains were made with
corn and alfalfa, using a full
corn ration. But the cheapest
gains were made with the least
corn ration in the test with al
falfa. Prof. Smith, in comment
ing on this experiment, remark
ed that "corn belt" feeders
would be obliged to useJess corn
or go out of the feeding business.
"When corn becomes too costly
to feed in Nebraska and Kansas,
we in Colorado cannot- hope to
pay freight on it and make a
profit. Our hay and alfalfa are
worth as much as the prices
which prevail farther east. If
our feeding goes forward, we
must grow our own feeds.
Of these, barley is one of the
most promising. Barley will
grow under a greater variety of
soil, climate and altitude than
most any other grain crop.
Colorado climate is well adapt
ed for its growth. As a feed,
barley is practically equal" to
corn. For putting on a high
market finish, corn is about 8
per cent more valuable than bar
ley, pound for pound. For
young stock and for the . first
weeks of fattening, barley is su
perior to corn.
It will produce a meat of
better ilavor and superior qual
ity. The amount of meat it is
capable of producing, per acre,
is fully as great as the best corn
in the "corn belt." Eight hun
dred pounds of pork per acre
have been produced on barley
in Colorado, a meat yield rival
ing the very best of the "corn
belt." "With a feed like barley
which we can grow at homo
cheaper than we can import
corn, why import corn to make
a poorer quality of meat?
The highest priced pork on
the market at present is barley
fed pork from Denmark. It
commands a higher price in the
English market because of su
perior quality. It does this in
suite of the fact that it comnetos

rado feeder should want to im
port corn in order to prpduce a
meat of poorer quality is one of
the mysteries of Colorado ag
