Piano Contest Booming
It is said that "Open confes
sion is good for the soul," hence
we may as well "acknowledge
the corn" and confess that the
object in starting the great vot
ing contest now going on was to
boom subscriptions and at the
same time give to a number of
lady friends of the paper prizes
that will repay them for any ef
fort they and their friends put
forth to secure them. The con
test is having the desired effect.
Subscriptions are booming and
the prospect is that they will
continue to boom for some time
to come.
As will now be seen by reading
the standing of the contest, Miss
Attie Snow still continues in the
lead, having made a gain during
the past week of 2,050 votes
which gives her a total of 15,550.
Miss Boon made the largest gain
of any of the candidates during
the last week, having increased
her vote 2,100 which places her
in second place with 13,42!) votes
to her credit and gives her the
special April prize of a $10.00
duo bill which she has chosen to
take on Geo. D. Mollring's store.
The total number of votes cast
for her on new subscriptions
from April 1st to May 4th, is 8,
845. Miss Ella Moravek now
holds third place, although only
450 votes behind Miss Boon.
Miss Nell Acheson increased her
votes during the week and con
tinues to hold fourth place.
Miss Alma Rosenberger made
a gain during the week of 2,030,
only 70 votes less than the gain
made by Miss Boon and 20 less
than Miss Snow's gain. ,Tbis
places her fifth in the list of can
didates instead of sixth as last
week.
Miss Jessie Geiger now has
sixth place, Miss Anna Dainton
seventh, Miss Theresa Morgan
eight and Miss Jennie Sandoz,
passes from the bottom of the
list to ninth plaee,-

Making Preparations for Celebration
W. S. Ridgell went to Craw
ford last Saturday to complete
arrangements with the Ft. Rob
inson military band. While there
he saw Col. Kingsbury and
learned that the 8th cavalry will
start for Cheyenne about July
1st to attend the summer ma
neuvers at Ft. A. D. Russell.
They will probably make the trip
via Alliance and we hope that
an effort will be made to get
them to stop here during the
celebration. We understand
that the proper committee will
take the matter up and see what
can be done.
Judge Ridgell informs us that
the Ft. Robinson military band
rwill bring their tents and camp
on eitner tne jbjiks' or eagles'
lots near the Drake hotel.

- Tag Day
June 16th has been designated as
"tag day" by the sisters who have
charge of Mercy Hospital. On that
day three ladies, Miss Mary O'Keefe,
Mrs. W. D. Rumer and Mrs. John
Brennan, each nssisjed by six girls, all
of whom will be supplied with suitable
tags, will solicit donations to he used
in furnishing the new hospital building
when it opens July ist. Every person
making a donation will be given a tag
to wear during the balance of the day.
As this will be something new for
this city, and as the donations will be
to help a work of mercy and charity, it
is expected that the public will respond
liberally on tag dav.
