New Cement Block Machine. with his machine with prospects of a busy season before him. Sec his ad in The Herald. W. fiTinrotes J. J. Vance, contractor and builder, has just received a new cement block machine, "The Leader," direct from the factory at Jackson, Michigan. The use of cement blocks in constructing dwellings and other buildings, and for foundation work, has become very pop ular within the last few years, espe cially since the art of making these blocks has been so perfected as to make the use of them exceedingly de sirable. Mr. Vance begins operations Miss Bertha Kulper was the winner of the silver medal at the contest which was held at the Baptist church last Saturday eve, The regular semi-monthly meeting will bo held next Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Elbert Laing. Mrs. Jennie Heed,, supt of the R. R. department will have charge of the program, A DiRT-y Problem. Mr. moderate drinker, while you arc stirring the sugar in that glass oft oddy, let me prescribe a chaser to take with it, to-wit: One acre of land contains 43,560 square feet. At $43.56 per acre, it is worth just one mill per square foot. So every time you exercise your "per sonal liberty" by pouring down your throat a 15 cent dose of firey Guggcn heimer, Bushmills, Old Crow, or any other rot gut, vou are swallowing a 150 foot strawberry patch. Invite four of your friends to join you in a social nip and a 750 foot garden patch disappears. Go on a prolonged' spree and see how long it takes you to lick up a cow pas ture. Yes, I know that you live in a "Christain Home," and beliv in ''home rule-" That you IipHpvb in moderation in all thine, ami take but three drinks a dav. u, thus limiting your appetite tu booze, you dispose of only 450 square feet of land per day, 3150 square feet per week, or 164,250 square feet per year. Owing to your extreme moderation, you have only guzzled a few thousand feet over 37K acres of good rich productive land, worth $43.56 per acre, in the past ten years. Did I say anything about a fool? No, I was only thinking of a moderate drinker. But if your real estate deals don't make you stagger a little, just take your pencil and figure out what a real booze fighter could accomplish in the same length of time. See Regan's for bar gains in trimmed hats. Denver Guests Honored. Last week one of our local scribes wrote a news item, under above heading, about a party given by Mesdames Roy Beckwith and Jerry Rowan in honor of Mrs. Holi day and Miss McDaniels of Denver. By a typographical error, the word "Denver', in the heading went through as "Dinner," giving a diflerent meaning from what was intended. . Queen Esther, April! 9-20 One of the greatest musical tieats that Alliance has ever been favored with is billed for April 19 and 20. As previously mentioned in the Herald, Prof. Bixler arrived in Alliance last week and at once began work in pre-11 paration for putting on the oratorio, "Esther, The Beautiful Queen," which will be given in the opera house on the dates above mentioned. There will be a grand chorus of 100 voices, assisted by a class of beautiful singing children, all in gorgeous cos tumes, representing Jews and Persians in ancient times. This cantata has been sung more in America than all other cantatas ever written, and a bounds in the most charming music. It Was thought that the desire to hear this great oratorio is sufficient to justi fy the management in producing it two nights in succession, and judging from expressions of interest which we hear, we believe there will be a large attend ance both evenings-Announcement.
