Cleaning Up at Crawford.
The sensation of the northwest corner of tho state the
last week has been the much-needed cleaning up that is tak
ing place at Crawford. On Wednesday of last weok Win, 0.
Kieffe, on behalf of the Anti-Saloon League, went to Chad
ron, the county seat, and swore out eighteen warrants for
the arx'est of alleged law breakers of Crawford.
On Friday, ten were brought into court. Five women
were lined $101.00 and costs, they having plead guilty on
two counts to being mistresses of houses of ill fame and
selling beer without license. Two men plead guilty to leas
ing their premises to be occupied as houses of ill fame and
were lined 50.00 each. Two colored men plead guilty to
selling liquor without a license and were fined $100.00 each.
James L. Hogle's bartender plead guilty on four counts to
selling after 8 p. m. and on Sunday, and was fined $100.00
and costs on one count, and sentence suspended on the other
three counts. P. L. Krickboom is to bo arraigned on the
charge of allowing premises to be used as houso of ill fame.
On Monday of this week, Chas. Price, H. G. Newcomb and
J. Newcomb were bound over to district court on gambling
charges. The trjal of Chas. Price and "Rafella Price, on
charge of allowing premises to be used as house of ill fame,
was set for Fob. 1th. Hodge Sanders, charged with gambl
ing, was to have been tried yesterday. Mayor P. G. Cooper's
trial, on tho charge of allowing premises to be used as a
brothel, comes off today. H. G. Nowcomb's trial on charge
of selling on Sunday and after H p. m. was set for yesterday.
John N. Bruer is to be tried today on same charges as New
comb. John McFarland, one of jlogle's bartenders, was to
have been tried yesterday on charge of selling on Sunday.
Mayor Cooper agreed to resign on Tuesday of this week.
We have not learned whether he did so. Wo understand
that John N. Bruer, member of the council, will also resign.
To a person unacquainted with Crawford, it might seem
that the entire town was given over to law breaking, but
such is far from being the case. The fact is, a large per
centage of the citizens are highly respectable and law-abiding.
If this were not true, there would not be the cleaning
up that is now taking place. We congratulate the respectable
people of that town on the good work that is being ,,done,
and hope it will. continue till Crawford becomes as noted for
virtue as it has' been for vice.
Temperance Rally at Alliance.
.- A union temperance meeting-will be held in the Phelan
Opera House next Sunday evening, Feb. Oth, at which RevT

Anti-Saloon League will deliver an address. Mr. Poulson
is reputed to be one of the leading temperance orators, not
only of this state but of the nation as well. He is a gentle
man in the broadest sense, and while intensely in earnest in
his efforts to abolish the traffic in intoxicating beverages,
treats those who differ in opinion with him fairly. Whether
you believe as he does or not, you will bo well entertained
if you go to hear him lecture.
Tamora, Nebraska, is one of the places where he has
lectured since coming to this state. The local paper of that
town, The Lyre, in its issue of January 27th, has the follow
ing to say regarding his address:
"As per previous announcement from the pulpit and
through these columns, Marna S. Poulson, editor of Tho
Issue, published in Lincoln, and also state superintend
ent of tho anti-saloon forces of Nebraska, occupied tho
pulpit in the morning at the Presbyterian church and
in the evening at the Methodist church, besides filling
m in an hour in the afternoon at Goehner. At each of
' these services he had large, attentive and appreciative
audiences, and especially so at the evening service, even
standing room being at a premium. The speaker hav
ing had a vast and varied experience in the work, has
thoroughly familiarized himself with the subject matter
that of denouncing the saloon traffic, He is not only
versed and logical, but he is exceptionally fluent and is
possessed of a remarkable delivery. His advanced
theme, in addition to dwelling upon the evil effects of a
close and continued companionship of John Barleycorn
and his lieutenants, is county option. In his addresses
he is fair not heaping coals upon the heads of his
enemies but on the contrary, pleads that they abandon
the liquor business and engage in a business of a legiti
mate nature,; "In case he should revisit Tamora, there
could not be'found a building largo enough to accomo
date those who would turn out to hear him."
