confirmation at 'a special meeting of
that body this morning. He will as
sume the duties of Ms now office at

ported a temperature of 103. This Is
tho climax of a hot wnvo which has
held Lincoln and southern Nebraska
In Its grip for two weeks. Suffering
horo has been intense. There has
been no rain In this section for two
weeks and roports from tho country
nro that the corn crop has altendy
been seriously damaged and will suf
fer much moro seriously If tho heat
wae and drought continues.
Onialin, Aug. 17. Five moro deaths,
in which tho heat was a contributory
cause, wero reported. These bring
tho total of deaths duo to heat in Oma
ha In twenty-four houra up to eleven.
Several other deaths, probably not
due to the broiling condition of the
weather, havo occurred during tho
banio period. At Coronor lloafey'u
morgue there aro seven oodles. Bo
sldes these ho has seven other cases,
making in all for tho ono undertaking

deaths.

wide primary for all political parties
Is being held In Nebraska today for
the nomination of three justices of
the supremo court and two regents of

BOY SHOT BY PLAYMATE
Walter Strayer of Lincoln Killed by
Philip Whltt.
Lincoln, Nob,, Aug. 13. Walter
Strnyor, a child of nine years, was
shot In tho forehead and killed by his
playmate, Philip Whitt, A 38-callbcr
revolver was used to Inflict tho wound.
Tho bullet entered tho chin and
ranged to tho hack of tbo neck, caus
ing partial paralysla. He was nhlo to
whisper that tho shooting had been In
tentional, but when tho Whltt child
wns found after several hours' search
ho declared tho gun had gono off acci
dentally. Tho llttlo Strayer boy lin

Tho Whltt boy is cloven years old.

Silica Mine Near Bridgeport.
Bridgeport, Nob., Aug. 10. A. Mo
lino nnd D. W. Sharp have located a
silica in,! no about eighteen miles from

one and the samples brought to town
show a mineral of excellent qunllty.
An effort will be mado to dispose of It
to ono of the big soap companies, but
failing In this, the product wll prob
ably bo pulverized and placed oh the
