We invite the co-operation of all readers In our efforts to make this de partment and the entire paper the newsiest and best ever. Hemingford Happenings. The Methodist people are planning a new $5,000 church edifice. M. Button is another Hemingford citizen who is building a new residence. F. K. Morrison of Alliance has charge of the carpenter work on the remodel ing of the hotel. The hospitality of Mrs. A. M Miller was enjoyed by a large number who were attending the contest last Satur day, including State Supt. Bishop. The new hotel which is being re modeled liv J. C. McCarty will bo open ed soon for business if the weather is such that the plasterers can keep at work. .loh 11 Arm$trong has his largo new barn nenrly completed on his farm four miles northeast of town. It is 40 feet by (50 feet, main building, with shed 00 feet long. It will have a hay capacity of 100 tons. January is a dull mouth in real es tate business, at least It Is supposed to be, but M. Button sold ten quarter sec tions during the month a good starter for the year. C J. Wlldy's new residence is equal led in beauty and convenience by but few even in cities much larger than Hemingford. The interior finish is of hard wood and is heated by a combina tion hot air-steam plant. It will be ready for occupancy soon. About 250 car loads of potatoes have been billed out of Hemingford during the last year. If you have friends in the east who Etlll entertain that anti quated notion that nothing much grows in this country send them a copy of this paper with this item marked. A mail pouch containing copies of The Herald of Feb 4th fell under the wheels of the train nt the Hemingford station anil was cut to pieces. Station Agent Carey gathered up the mail as best ho could, but a number of copies of The Herald were destroyed. Sub scribers who failed to get their paper of that date can secure same by writ ing or calliug for it. AUG. F. HORNBURG Private Nurse Phone 492 County Industrial Contest. Notwithstanding the very cold weather last Saturday, there was a largo at tendance at the Box Butte County Industrial contest, held in the Hemingford school building. Although the rooms of the building are large, it was evident that they would not have been large enough tonccommodate the crowd had the weather beeu more favorable. A special train ran from Alliance, or to speak more uccuratcly coaches were attached to the early morning freight train and it was held till eight o'clock before starting. One hundred nnd sixty or more persons were on this train, besides there was a good attendance from Heming ford nnd surrounding country, , The exhibits consisted of school work, industrial work and farm products, en tered by school children and students under 18 years old. The display as a whole wbb good, very good considering that this was the first contest of the kind held In Box Butte county, and we feel like congratulating County Supt. Phillips, the teachers of the county and the contestants upon the success of the enterprise. All the school districts in the county, except two, nearly sixty, were represented. State Supt E. C. Bishop was present and assisted in judging the exhibits and awarding the prizes. It Is not possible for us to mention the names of all teachers and pupils present, as wo would be pleased to do were it practicable, but below we glvo a list of the names of winning contestants and the prizes that were awarded by the .committee: T, J.
