Cecil Smith Wins in Oratory
At the state declamatory contest held
at Norfolk last Friday, Cecil Smith, son
of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Smith, of this
city, was awarded first place. Tho cit
izens of Alliance sharo with tho young
man tho honor of his success. He is a
junior scholar iu the city high school,
and his ability along oratorical lines
has been recognized for some time.
Cecil was accompanied to Norfolk by
Supt. D. W. Hayes who, by the way,
was elected president of tho state asso
ciation for the ensuing year. They re
turned home from Lincoln last Monday.
Life's Pilgrimage Ended.
John Hannan, father of Mrs. E, P.
Woods of this city, died at the home of
his daughter yesterday from tho effects
of a paralytic stroke ho sustained re
cently. Mn Hannan was 70 years of
age, having resided in Box Butte coun
ty since February 10, igoS. He was
born in Michigan April 26, 1836, and
leaves a wife, six daughters and two
sons. Tho funeral will take place to
morrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the
Methodist church and interment will
be in Greenwood cemetery. Deceased
was a popular man and had many
friends who will share with the rela
tives in the sorrow of his taking away.

office of the Custer County Chief, of
Broken Bow, a new linotype casting
machine having been installed therein
recently. Well, the Purcell Bros, are

ing a great increase in its capacity of
business and Manager Spencer says it
now looks as if the plant will soon be
turning out a car-load of butter each
week. This amount will mean several
thousand dollars worth of this famous

Editor Burleigh, of the Hemingford
Journal, spent Sunday on his ranch
near Lakeside. A family reunion was
a ifeature of the visit and there were
many in the circle to enjoy the event.

nounced his intention of again making
Alliance his place ot residence. His
children will arrive here about tho first
of tho month, and then they will settle
down to housekeeping. It is with pleas
