Hazard For County Commissioner J. v. Christy Judge Spncht for Clerk. Among the candidates for county of (ices this fall, 110110 is more widely known than Judge D. K. Spacht, the democratic and people's parties candi date for county clerk. Mr. Spacht is exceptionally well qualified for tho po sition to which he aSpircs and the re cords of Box Dutto county, in the event of his election, will bo kept in a condi tion equal to tho best in tho state. An other feature that recommends him for the place is the information ho posses ses of matter relative to this office. It is a well known fact that fully one-half tho records of the county are in his handwriting and written in smooth, legible manner. To those having busi ness nt the clerk's office, Mr. Spacht would be an accommodating, agrccabU officer to deal with and no time would bo lost in gaining desired information. Everyone who has any knowledgo of county affairs will readily Jcar us out in this. A resident of eighteen years in Box Butto county has made Judge Spacht ouo of our most substantial citizens. He is from the Keystone state and on coming to Nebraska locat ed at Seward, where ho was employed in a bank as accountant, again proving his worth from a cleiical standpoint. Tim Hkuald therefore takes great pride in presenting tho name of Judge Spacht for the office of county clerk, and docs so on tho merits he has justly earned. ,w. His Record as Treasurer. Tho past two years as county treas urer has placed Clias. V. Brcnnan be foro the people of Box Butto count) in a most favorable light, and tho fact that tho universal praise lie is receiv ing lends to this prestige, is sufficient evidence that he will succeed himself in tho office. Mr. Brcnnan won out in the race two years ago over his competitor by a close margin, which brought on a contest and after every step was contested gained possession of the office. His conduct in the admin istration thereof has been such that his re-election is practically assured. And why should it not bo? Faithful service for tho whole people is worthy of con sideration just the same as the good graces of any other faithful servant. Box Butte county never had a more competent and obliging official than Charlie Brcnnan and one good term deserves another. Tho Treasurership " Alex. Mulrhead had u majority for county treasurer two years hko, but a contest una .liicstlonablo proceeding ousted him. Tar us illi'Pil votes were concerned, nobody doubts but whut nine out ot ten wero ucalnst Alex., (or be never entered to such un element, nnd never will. He was defrauded of his rights twi yeurs ago, now let's vindicate the man. lie was defeated In the content proceedings and nianlpulntloa of the tail lots, which were In possession of the fuslou rlns. The best Informed people of this county have always held that ho was rightfully elected and defrauded of the place." Such slush as the above extracts will not go down with the intelligent voters of Box Butte county. It will be remembered that no contest was instituted on the grounds of illegal ballots but for a recount. The case was gone over thoroughly, Mr. Mulrhead being represented by able coun sel, and after every ballot was counted it was found that each candidate had an equal number. District Judge Westover decided that lots should be cast to decide who should be declared elected and he ac cordingly prepared, in open court, two envelopes, one of which contained a slip on which was written the word "County Treasurer" and the other contained a blank slip. Mr. Mulrhead was then given the first chance to draw and he drew the blank. Had Mr. Muirhead been the successful one neither Mr. Brennan nor his friends would now be howling "questionable methods'' or that he should be "vindi cated", etc. The ballots were not in the possession of the "fusion ring" nor any other ring but were properly cared for by County Clerk Smyser and the Times man should be careful about making such insinuations. Tub Herald is of the opinion that if Mr. Mujrhead believed he was entitled to the office he would have carried the case to the supreme court and we also believe that he possesses too much manhood to ap prove of such bosh as appears in the re publican organ in connection with the county treasurership. It is certain that tne "well informed" people of the county do not. vs.vwvwvvuny,,rtn.-wwvu SCHOOL NOTES J r lkk stave. vvv"-rvvvjvvw,,uv,vvv,w,."bn. Carl Mallery is on the sick list this week, suffering from a bad cold. Misses Anna Reck and Ada Simpson were high school visitors last Thursday afternoon. All pupils intending to enter the declam atory contest, must report their selections by to-morrow evening. Many able speak ers are intending to enter the contest this year, and it is expected that this will bo one of the best contests ever held in this city. Last Thursday evening when the Ifigh school foot-ball team was practicing Urb han Zediker was tripped by a small boy, causing him to fall and fractnre three fin gers on his right hand. The small children should be kept away from the grounds of the larger boys. Prof. T. M. Hodgeman, state inspector of accredited high schools, Spent all of Tuesday afternoon, visiting tho high school and inspected the work of the different classes. During the last half hour of tho afternoon session, he gave a very interest ing and profitable talk to the pupils, mak ing a very marked Impression on tho stud ent body, in his anneal for a higher educa tion. .Among other things he stated that the lazy pupil has no place in the univer sity : that lack of money does not bar one from completing a college course ; that ho was addressing an accredited school, and that out of the one hundred and twenty-five accrcdiled high schools in this state, there are every year at least three thousand stu dents who enter upon a college course, while out of the four hundred and twenty five schools not accredited, only about five hundred seek a higher education. Mr. Hodgeman also warned the students against some of tho pitfalls incidental to college life, when one is "his own boss." From the rapt attention given Prof. Hodgeman, 1t is safe to assume that every student will look forward with pleasurable anticipation to another visit from tho Inspector.
