J. C. Sager,
Office,
In June and July 1904, a number of
men from Chicago came out and filed
on homesteads in Sioux county in a
buach and established what is called
The Chicago Ranch Co. The object of
getting the land together in a body was
that tbey could reside thereoa and have
a neighborhood of their own and im
profo the places with the help of each
other. For most of the claims relin
quishments were purchased and every
thing seemed to be moving smoothly
enough until recently when several of
the claims were contested because of
the parties not residing on the land
continuously rather than going to the
places as often as they could. The
Spearman Bros., of Crawford contested
five of the claims and they with their
witnesses and attorneys Capt. A. G.
Fisherand Frank Allen were at the
land office Monday to proceed with the
contest. The defendants were repre
sented by Attorney F. S. Baird of Chi
cago. By stipulation the cases were
continued to Noy. 15, when all parties
will appear and get busy. In addition
to those contests, the government by
its special agent has filed contests
against several others of the claims and
altogether it would look like there
will be considerable business at tho
land office during the coming month.
In Monday's Omaha Bee appeared a
dispatch from Washington which was
one of the most grossly misleading
articles yet published concerning lands
in western Nebraska. It stated that
several townships had been withdrawn
from entry in the Alliance land district
and stated it in a way to leavo the in
ference that all lands had been with
drawn. The real truth of the matter
is that the commissioner of the general
land office wrote the land office to note
on the tract books the withdrawl of
sections 21, 22, 23, 26, 27 and 28 in
town 24, range 57, eleven sections in
all, lying along the survey of the new
government irrigating ditch. The ob
ject of withdrawing them is to furnish
camping grounds for the contractors
outfit soon to begin work on the ditch.
Nothing else is affected by the order,
and any other section in the district
subject to homestead entry can be filed
upon by any qualified entryman the
same as has always been the case.
Joseph Shramek, wife and children
arrived in Alliance Tuesday night from
down in the Platte Valley where Mr.
Shramek has considerable ranch and
farming interests. They went on down
to David City Wednesday morning.
, George Gillmor was down from Glen,
Sioux county, Wednesday for the pur
pose of . completing his homestead
amendment which had been allowed
him sometime ago to add more land on
to his homestead.
John F. Bradford was down from
his farm near Rushville Tuesday, with
witnesses offering final proof on the
homestead of his father who is now
dead, A man named Amende is con
testing it and final action on the proof
must await the outcome of the contest.

Herd numbers go breeding cows that
weighing 1400 to 1S00 pounds, a large
number being pure Scotch, and as good
breeding as was ever brought from Scot
land. Experience has taught me that for
breeding purposes cattle shipped in are
very little good the first year, their consti
tutions must become accustomed to our
high altitude and our grass. Hence ani
mals raised here are preferable, I intend
to raise them here. Good, first class
Nebraska breeders, the equal to anything
raised in the U. S. Come and see me.
