Memorial services for Alva Sherwood,
who died last week in Michigan, were held
in the Congregational church. The church
was filled 'with Mr. Sherwood's friends,
who thus showed their heartfelt sympathy
in the terrible loss that came to him so
suddenly.
Jess Elder and Miss Emma Brown were
married at the M. E. parsonage Monday
evening, Oct. 2, Rev. Burleigh officiating.
The bride and groom are well known and
popular young people and their friends
join in wishing them a happy married life,
They will make their bbmein this vicinity.
This week will end the writer's connec
tion with the Alliance Herald as corres
pondent from Hemingford. Work in other
lines has so increased that the correspond
ence for several months has not been what
it might have been, therefore I turn it over
to less busy hands. The Herald editor
has secured tho services of the principal of
schools here, Mr. Ora Phillips, who will
without doubt demonstrate superior abili
ty as a gatherer of news. Anyone wishing
to pay subscriptions may pay me as here
tofore or any one having job work to be
done may leave it with me and same will
receive the careful consideration of the
Herald management.
Alonzo Sherwood received the sad intel
ligence of the death of his son Alva, which
occured on Tuesday night. He was riding
his Horse at the West Michigan fair at
Grand Rapids, of which he was president,
He was accidentally thrown from the
horse Thursday and died Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Sherwood was at Hot Springs and
Mr. Sherwood and she made arrangements
by telegraph to go east Wednesday night
but later they received news that they
could not be there in time so they did not
go. Alva Sherwood was county treasurer
of Berrien county, Michigan, and by un
usual business ability had accumalated con
siderable property in the course of an hon
orable business career. Besides bis wife
he leaves a son and a daughter not yet
grown. This is a sad blow to Mr. Sher
wood and every one sympathizes with him.
Omer Roland was accidentally killed
Friday evening by being violently
thrown to the ground on account of the
lines becoming entangled about his feet.
His neck was broken and he passed away
almost instantly. The funeral services
took place at the cemetery at 3 p. m, Sun
day. Omer Roland was 22 years, 6
months and 28 days old and was the eld
est of nine children. He leaves five sisters
and three brothers. He was married
about two years ago to Miss Bessie Keane.
He leaves one child, a girl. Omer was a
hardworking, upright young man who had
a host of friends. His sudden death came
as a shock to the whole community. His
wife and his near relatives cannot but be
very sorrowful at this time and all their
friends grieve with tbem at their untimely
loss. The widow and parents desire to
thank those who kindly assisted them.
Something will have to be done to get
the crossings here cut 100 feet as required
by the town ordinance. Trainmen seem
