CHAPTER XVII. Continued.
No ono is hurl, but each man draws
n long breath, as if comprehending
that the battle Is now on, and that it
will not cease until much destruction
has been wrought.
So .luck scrambles to his knees nnd
has his arm out of the window almost
immediately. That hand holds a
werpou. and ono ho knows well how
to mnnipiilate.
The gueirillas present as fair a tar
get as anyone could wish, scon In tho
light of tho fires. Jack Trnvers has
had many opportunities for becoming
nn expert shot.
If ho were denllng with wild bensts
of the chaparral ho would have no
moro thought of mercy than he feels
toward these lawless outcasts whose
hands are raised against both- sides
and whose daily calendar is marked
by terrible dee,ds. ,
Sov Travers opens right merrily
upon' llicm, 'Tils only tleslre being to
make each one of the six bullets give
a good accounting. . ;)
Ho Is not allowed to monopolize the
whole affair. Smlthers is just as eager
to have a Tinnd In it, nnd his gun
sounds about as regularly as Jack's.
The senor nnd Spencer also manage
to get In a shot or two, and taken
all together, the reception they spring
upon tho astonished guerrillas H fully
as efficacious as it is sudden.
A temporary demoralization seizes
upon the assailants, and they melt
away. Some run to tho shelter of
trees, others to tho opposito stdo of
tho carriage, whlla- n few drop to the
ground, hoping that among the
wounded they may bo safe for the
present.
"Well done," cries Don Rafael; "but
is anybody hurt?"
They havo lucidly escaped nil In
Jury, which fact may bo laid to the
unprepared condition of the enemy.
Perhaps when a secotid engagement
has ended they may not bo able to
present such a fine showing.
"Listen!" exclaims Jack.
The report of firearms can bo heard.
"Some of (hem havo entered tho
carriage!" exclaims Roblado, for tho
shots certainly sound close to their
ears.
Jack scouts the idea.
"Not quite so bad as that," ho says.
"But listen. Those reports are sure
ly just beyond this thin partition.
Carramba!" as two shots sound at
once.
"That is true. Rut they arc fired
"by the guard and my servant, who,
cut oft from this compartment by the
advance of the enemy, havo been com
pelled to tako refngo in there."
"I believe you are correct, senor.
That is a piece of luck In our favor."
A sudden silence has fallen on tho
scene a silence that seems to pro
sago the coming tempest a silence
that Is even moro terrlHlo than the
clamor that has preceded It.
The situation Is cerlninly very
black, and even sangulno Squire John
does not dare (o think of what the
Immediate future may hold for them.
To successfulir defend tho carriage
against these dare-devil guerrillas Is
a task well-nigh impossible. Above
all, Jack dreads lest the enemy con
ceive the idea of utilizing llro in order
to accomplish their end. Tho old car
riage If once kindled would burn
like tinder. So Trnvers finds himself
In the position of a master at chess
who discovers a weak point In his de
fense whereby he may be mated, and
as it is liis opponent's move, he sits
there on nettles awaiting tho discov
ery that will bring his defense to
naught.
Smlthprs knocks on tho wnll.
"Hello, there!" ho calls, and the
guard answers.
"Hold the fort; load up again, nnd
Travers opens right merrily upon
them,
be ready for a sortie If necessary,"
again calls the agent.
Tho sllenco doos not last long; but
In the interim the guerillas have evi
dently been heavily reinforced, If the
fearful chorus of screeches and
"Again!" shouts Roblado, pushing
close to tho openlug; "and let It be
to the death, senors alK"

Jnek Is really appalled at tho numbor
of desperate men opposed to his little
band, and moro than over docs ho
realize what un uphill task lies before
thum; Indood, It must bo through n
mlraclo that they escape, If at nil.
As the guerrillas ndvnnco they open
fire on tho carriage with nil manner
of guns; so while this firing lnsts It
Is necessary for tho defenders to llo
low, lest some of the missiles that sing
so lively a tune, and snap splinters
from tho frnmowork above, find a
moro congenial lodgment within their
bogles,
Smllhers seems to realize that their
enemies are poorly provided with fire
arms. Ho believes they will speedily
exhaust their fire, when It may bo
reasonably safe for himself and allies
to reply.
Just as ho figured so It comes to
pass. Tho shots, which dropped so
fast in tho beginning, become more
scattered and about cense.
"Now, give It to them!" roars
Smlthers.
A gnllant burst follows fire flnshes
in spiteful streaks from that sldo of
tho carriage.
Again they scatter, as' before, leav
ing a portion of their number on tho
ground; but Jack notices n difference
In tholr actions. Tho majority dash
alongside tho carriage. They aro
thus out of tho allies' range unless
ono dares thrust his head and nrm
outside, which aciion would be al
most suicidal.
Sounds aro heard ns of some ono
pounding. They como from under
neath the carriage, nnd mystify even
Smlthers for n time. It Is evident that
their enemies surround them, and
havo even mounted to tho roof, as
they can bo heard moving about.
Tho suspense is torture.
Smlthers hns kept on guard, watch
ing tho oponing; nor docs ho watch
In vain. Without warning, ho sud
denly fires liis pistol, and from the
floundering on tho roof, together with
tho terrible Spanish curses that cause
the girls to clap their hands over their
ears, It seems positive that somo
reckless follow allowed curiosity to
get tho better of discretion when ho
lowered his head in tho attempt to In
vestigate the Interior of tho carriage.
Jack can stand it no longer.
Ho already imagines ho can hear
the crackling of flames underneath the
carriage. Something desperate must
bo Uore.
"Senor, assist mo In opening the
othor door just wido enough to allow
tho passage of my body," ho says to
Roblado.
"Carajo! what would you do. young
senor?" asks tho Spaniard, while Jack
sees tho girls rise to their knees at
his words as though in alarm.
"Something must bo dono Imme
diately. I do not like to alarm the
ladles, but I fear those wretches mean
to burn the carriage that they may
-bo oven now sla'rtlrig fires underneath
us," returns Travers, quickly, des
perately. "But tell me, how would your going
havo any effect? They will shoot you
on sight. You aro a bravo man,
senor, but we cannot afford to lose
you." declares Roblado.
"I must go. I believe I can change
onr cordUons. Tho light of theso
fires is apt to prove our ruin. See,
they nre upon the curve; this other
side is almost in shadow. I will take
my chances. Once out, senor, I can
send tho carriage perhaps two hun
dred yards away from this fatal spot,"
"Alone you, senor?"
"It is easy, I tell you. There, you
have the door ready to open. I shall
go."
"Senor. I seo you aro determined,
so good-bye, and Heaven protect you,"
says Roblado. squeezing his hand.
Jack gravely wrings that of Smlth
ers. for he hardly expects to see him
again at least, the chances are
ngnlnst it.
Then, ns ho turns to squeeze
through tho narrow opening, ho is
stopped by tho senor's daughter, who
seizes his hnnd.
"Sir, tho Virgin guard you. This
night you may win that which you
prize above all else on earth. Jessie,
Did Jum uodspeed, says tho Spanish
girl, hastily.
Then Jack for tho second time In
his life holds the hnnd of his wife
in his own, and oro ho releases It ho
has pressed a kiss there.
Ho dares linger no longer, but filled
with high aspirations regarding the
desperate plan that has Hashed upon
his mind, ho slips through the narrow
ogeuing.
Just as ho feared, the crafty assail
ants aro endeavoring to start a new
blazo under the forwnrd end. Their
diabolical intention is to havo the
carriage afire, when those who have
twice given them such a warm recep
tion must come forth to their fate or
roast in the flames.
Travers has a chance to put his
llttlo plan into operation.
Creeping along besido tho carriage,
he reaches the wheel where Ah Sin
placed tho iron pin.
Much depends on his ability to with
draw this. As the weight of tho car
riage must In n meastu-o be resting
upon It. ho may find this task be
yond his strength.
Backward and forward ho twists It,
while tho fire risos hlghor. His energy
Incroases; In sheor desperation he
puts forth gigantic efforts. All the
while ho Is encouraged by tho fact
that tf-o pin moves more freely.
At length a tremendous rally on
Jacks part rIvos him success tho'
coupling pin Is In his hands.
Now, If tho cnrrlngo will only take
a notion to descend the short grade!
But there Is no occnslon for mental
anxiety with regard to this, slnco tho
withdrawal of tho Iron pin Is Instant
ly succeeded by n movement on tho
part of the rnllwny carriage.
Jack has driven In his ljrst stake,
and It remains to bo seen whether ho
can hold his claim against ail comers.
Upon finding tho car la motion
thero Is a burst of Bhouts from thoso
underneath nnd others on top.
In this emergency nothing enn be
found with which to block tho wheels,
and already too much momentum has
been acquired to accomplish this ro
Biilt by mero muscular effort.
Jack, finding thnt It will not bo nec
essary for him to bland by nnd pre
vent any detaining nctlon with his re
volver, censes to run nlongsldo tho
cnrrlngo, clutches hold of tho side,
and swings himself on the footboard.'
Tho heavy cnrrlngo gains mo
mentum ns It proceeds. Jack only
wishes thero might bo n down grado
nil tho way to Havana, when thoy
would reach tho Cuban capital with
flying colors. '
Alas! It is but a baby run perhaps
two hundred feet, then n short level,
nnd after thnt n rise, where thoy will
again bo stopped.
Well, that is tho limit of his hopes,
Backward and forward he twists It.
and ho can find no cause for com
plaint. Already thoy aro on tho level; the
momentum acquired causes the cnr
rlngo to ascend tho other rlso thirty
yards or moro, when it gradually
ceases to push onward. Jack is on
tho alert; he jumps off nnd makes
an admlrablo uso of tho Iron pin,
against which tho burden of tho ad
venturous carriage again rests.
Jack Is pleased with the result.
Thoy havo a fighting chance, now
that the light of the tires does not
betray them.
No sooner has ho made sure thnt
tho pin will hold than ho rushes
nround to tho other side, and reaches
tho door.
"Senor, It Is I!" ho exclaims, not
wishing to be too warmly received.
Ho Is greeted with exclamations
of Joy from within, and his hearing
must indeed bo very aculo to catch'
feminine voices from among tho rest.
"It was beautifully done," declares
Roblado, with enthusiasm.
"Very good; but wo havo ouly'
made a beginning, senor. Listen, nnd
you will hear their shouts as they
follow. Seo how they wave torches
snatched from tho fires as they come!
We havo still moro hot work awaiting
us."
"You never spoke truer wordB, sir!"
exclaims Smlthers; "nnd wo aro fools
If we allow them to build moro fires
around us. Out, then, every man, and
keep them nt bay. Hello! there, In
the other section! Open the door nnd
join us. Tho situation has changed,
and we must not allow ourselves to
bo shut up again. All hands on deck
to repel boarders!"
(To bo continued.)

Ono of Senator Frye's scintillations

Senator Bacon, wishing to mako a

THE HARMONIES OF HOME.
A Matter of Blended Chords, and
Even Discords.
It hns been said thnt "the two es
sentials of a perfect homo nro free
dom nnd sympathy." In considering
this, the two may seem as Irreconcil
able ns free will nnd predestination.
If onch member of tho homo clrclo Is
freo to fly off at his or her particular
tangent, where is tho binding and
uniting sympathy to come in? Doubt
less it is a hard saying, like any other
counsel of perfection. Yot thnt tho
truest homo must combine tho largost
liberty nnd Uio closest lovo is certain,
and nlso thnt" the omission of cither
destroys the heart of homo life.
A good homo-maker needs to seek
both these essentials with all her pow
er. Many women skilled In house
keeping, full of tender leve to bus
band and children, nro yet imperious
and exacting through their very love.
Freedom Is to them a departuro from
what they consider harmony. But
harmony is not n mntter of ono note
It Is tho science of blended choris
and oven discords Into tho desired
theme. Sometimes It Is necessary for
tho wife and raotljer herself to piny
Bccond fiddle, so to spenk, In tho
orchestra, or lo let another member
develop a motive all by himself or
herself Just as necessary ns to under
stand the other parts, and sustain
them when tho music requires it.
For lack of perception of this, many
homes, full of love, are nlso full of
discord, till the household ceases to
expect anything cIjjo nnd accepts
family jnro as on inovitablo part or
family life. Montreal Herald.

It is a French engineer who seri

wire woven in tho goods and a stor

tion ho affirms that tho body can be
kept at n comforlnble tempcrnturo In

parent reason why wo should stop
with this. Little if any moro curront
would bo needed to produce a light
such' ns persous on" the vaudovlllo
stago display. Thus every pedestrian
at night would Iwcomo n walking

to shock nn inebriate who might wish
to cling to him. It would bo practic
able, too, for an American inventor
