H. R. Green was duly surprised the
first of the week by the advent of a nephew
from Vermont. He will remain in this
Vicinity some time according to his present
plans.

Each parent should read the rules and ad

this year seems to be satisfactory to the
patrons.
The Canton people are invited to be
present at the annual meeting of the Hem
ingford telephone company on the second
of next month. It has been suggested
that if the southwest line takes up the high
line idea the Canton lino could buy
the right of way for theii wire over the
line and lessen tho cost of coming to town
for them and at the sams time reduce the
cost of a good line to those on the south
west line from town, Tho above is merely
a suggestion made by one of the members
of the southwest line.
The Farmers' Institute held here Wed
nesday was a complete success. Speak
ora were here from the University of
Nebraska. Interesting discussions of the
topics most of interest in this locality
took place. The public schools were dis
missed that day and they had an exhibit
of their work in agriculture which was
praised by the speakers as the first of that
kind which they had been shown in con
nection with the farmers institutes they
had attended. They also said that the
work was of a very high order. The Arm
strong district was also dismissed for the
day and the children took notes of the
lectures. These institutes will be a per
manent,featu re hereafter.
MARSLAND.
Rev. Shriver has purchased .1 new horse
and carriage.
Mr. and'.Mrs. E. T. Gregg were Craw
ford visitors Monday,
A. E. Byers .made a trip oyer into Box
Butte county Monday.
Mrs. II. L. Richardson is spending a
few days visiting her si3ter Mrs. Frank
Moore on the ranch.
Mrs. James Hollirake of Uemingford
came down on 41 Sunday remaining over
until Monday the guest of Mrs. George
Gregg.
Bert and John Furman bought two hun
dred had of calves from Mrs. Haines of
Snake creek and brought them home the
latter part of the week.
The Misses Grant, of Deadwood, who
have homesteads in Box Butte county
were met at this place by Emmett Johnson
who took them out to their new possessions
where they spent a few days.
Mr, Pete Randall and Miss Laura Ship
ley were married Wednesday of last week.
We have no particulars to chronicle of the
happy event. The bride is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. John Shipley.
There is no end to wondering as to why
Mr. O'Keefe sold out The Herald, but it
is thought by some that he had so many

John Kay of Linton ranch was in town
on Thursday having come down after a
fine Hereford bull which came by express
from the east. Mr, Kay is one of those
ranchmen whp takes much pride in keep
ing the very best grade of cattle.
Burk's extra work outfit arrived in town
Sunday having come to build a new side
tmcl; in the breaks southeast of town at a
point woere trains very frequently stick
and cause much delay of trains and loss of
time. About 4,000 feet of track will be
laid.
Marsland isn't in it with our sister town
Uemingford for petty thieving. It is no
uncommon occurance here to lose a cow or
a steer and sometimes a horse, but' up
there they steal coal from a poor widow
woman. So says the Uemingford news
gatherer.
Railroad Rumblings.
Fireman F. L. Hinkley and wife, are
visiting at Omaha.
Conductor Harry Cantlin and wife are
visiting at Lincoln,
The pay car was in Alliance Tuesday
and made boys happy
. Dispatcher F. W. Sharpe has returned
from a trip over the division.
Engineer D. Landrigan and wife went
to Sheridan Tuesday to visit relatives.
Conductors Joder and Perry of the Ster
ling division are laid up with the grip.
Brakeman C. W. Moats ha3 resigned
from the service and left for Ravenna.
Railroad contractor D. J. Burke is grad
ing for the new siding between Marsland
and Girard.
Conductor Wood is relieving Conductor
Conn of the east end local who is visiting
in Illinois.
Master Mechanic Kramer was unable to
be at his office a couple of days this week
owing to illness.
Brakeman I. E, Kennedy has gone to
Kansas City and it is reported that he will
return with a bride.
Conductor Charlie Matthews and family
are spending the week at the True Miller
ranch in Sioux county.
Engineer 'Gene Parks and Conductor
Art Gordon are visiting relatives and
friends in the eastern part of the state.

General Superintendent Rhodes and
Foremati Dewey were out on an inspection
trip this week over the Sterling division.
H. J. German, secretary to General
Superintendent Rhodes, and J. H. Water
man of Lincoln made a trip of inspection
over the Wyoming division this week.
Leroy Cunningham resigned his position
as clerk in the master mechanic's office
and left Thursday for his former home in
Ohio. He is succeeded by W. T. Schlupp.
J. C. Birdsell, assistant superintendent,
of Deadwood, passed through Alliance this
morning enroute to Los Angeles, Cali., on
a pleasure trip. He was accompanied by
Mrs. Birdsell.
Roadmaster Mclntyre has a large force
of men at work cutting ice for the com
pany at Marsland. About 5.000 tons will
be housed in the new ice houses at Alli
ance within the next two weeks.
Mr. Will Cliue is confined to his bed
with a serious attack of the grippe.
