turned last Saturday from the Hrennan
Bros, ranch at Orlando, accompanied by
Mrs. Kichard Brennan.
Misses May Kennedy and May dew
berry departed Tuesday morning for
Omaha, at which place they will enter t?t.
Mary's school for a year's study.
Mr. and Mrs. W. C, Mounts were pas-
seugers to Hemingford last Sunday where J
they attended the funeral of Mrs. Osborne,
They also spent a few days visiting with
friends.
Harry Kotchum, who has been employed
on the Times of this city has resigned from
his position on that publication and has
gone home to assist his father Col. W. II,
Kotchum on the Crawford Tribune.
Misses Hattie I ucker nnd Josephine
Kelleher, of Omaha stopped off here a
couple or days last week enroute to Sheri
dan. While in tho city they were enter
tained by Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Pardee.
Henry Lichte and son Fred were down
from the ranch near Dunlap Tuesday on
land office business. Mr. Lichte offered
his ranch for sale sometime ago but has-
now decided that ho does not want to sell.
Rev. S. F. Clark, father-in-law of Uobt.
Graham, arrived in Alliance Wednesday
for a two weeks stay. Rev. Clark is from
Rock Island, III., where he has preacheil
in the United Presbyterian church for 13
years.
Quite a large number of people attended
the services at the Oaptist church last Sun
day evening and were seemingly well
pleased with the sermon delivered by Rev.
Jeffers. It what i termed a Labor day
sermon.
, J. A. Hunter came down from Heming
ford Tuesday. Mr. Hunter is looking for
a property to move into so he can have the
best possible .school advantages for his
son. The Hbrai.d welcomes this family
to our city.
Kmmett Johnsou was in from his Sioux
county ranch Wednesday. Mr. Johnson
sajs that he can no longer be accused of
living on tho "frontier" for aince the pas
sage of the Kinkaid bill ho can sight several
homesteaders mansions.
Joe Thornton has returned from Jiis
homestead southeast of town where he
spent two weeks putting up hay and car
ing for a twelve acre potato patch. He
acquired a good complexion and hi hands
show that he wore no gloves.
1 he Humor building is being repaired
tliu week. The stairway is being taken
out and put on the south side of tlte build
ing. This will make quite an improve
ment for the store as it will give them con
siderable more space for displaying their
goods.
Great preparations are being mad for a
grand reunion and county fair at Gariag
both to l held next week. Judging from
lists at liand we learn that liberal purses
are offered and that there will be a long
line of amusements for everybody. Alli
ance will furnish a portion of the big
crowd thtt will be present.
At last the old city well is of the past
The recent caving in of the walls has
put her out ol business, and now the city
has but one well with which to supply her
people with wator, which is hardly suffi
cient for all needs, but the city council at a
meeting Monday night passed an ordinace
for the putting down of two new walls.
This is as it should Iw, which .i11 cnible
the pumping station .to supply water in
sufficient quantities for nil emergencies,
Tiir Hkraid is informed that work will be
commencad upon these new wells just as
soon ns the proper machinery and men, can
be secured.
A tenni of horses belonging to J. Kice
took a little evtrn spin around town Wed
nesday Mr. Kice had just loaded up with
n lot of feed stuffs and in some manner the
team stnrled down the street at a lively
gait running onst en Dakotn stroet about
four or five blocks then south one block
then west to main street whero they wsre
stopped. Nothing was damaged in the
least by the spin but tho wonder is that
they did not collide with something in their
mad (light.
A man giving his name as Newton was
arrested one day Inst week by Marshal
Boon. The staid Newton hailed from
Hynnnis, whore he hnd entered an outfit
car and stole a valise containing some
clothes and jowolry, shipping tho same
by express to Alliance, he himself boating
his way on a freight train. The sheriff
came up from Grant county and took Mr.
Hobo back with him.
W. A. Coleman, who has been lying at
his house here with appendicitis for some
time, was operated upon Wednesday after
noon by Dr. L. W. Bowman who was assis
ted in the operation by Dr. Betclhcim.
Dr. Moore administered the auaesthtic.
Mri Coleman is reported as coming
through the operation all right and the
chances are very favorable for his ultimate
recovery.
Just the right thing! We refer to the
work being done near the court house in
way of breaking ground for lawn purposes.
When spring time arrives the lots will be
in elegant shape for seeding down to grass.
There are other lot's throughout the city
which would be a great "turn" if the own
ers would do likewise, This is the sort of
work that makes a city more beautiful,
A number of our citizens have expressed
a desire to show their appreciation of the
Alert Fire Department but' were at a loss

state that since the boys ate furnishing
their new quarters, a book-case, matting,
periodicals or pictures for the walls would
be highly appreciated.
Mrs. Lewis Raymond of Scnttsbluff has
been in Alliance this week arranging for a
recital to be given under the auspices of
Methodust church and Fpworth League
by Mae Shumway Kndorly, a graduate of
the LosAngelos conservatory of music and
art. At the Methodist church Wednes
day evening September 21st. "
After a vacation at St. Louis and Paxton,
Illinois, Miss Kathryn Du (field has return
ed to Alliance and is at her post iu the city
schools. While away she visited at the
World's fair remaining the balance of the
lime with her parents at the latter place.
Rev. C. W. Ray departed Monday for
Atkinson to be present at the north west
Nebraska conference which is in session at
that place this week. It is the universal
desire among church people that Mr Ray
be returned here for (mother year.
K, Doyer has just finished paiuting his
house on his ranch oast of town which add 3
much to the appearance of that neighbor
hood. It is wondo'rful what enchantment
there is in paint when properly applied
with brush on a house
The Foreign Missionary society met at
ths home of F. M. Phelps Wednesday and
put in the evening tying comforts for th
family of Mr. Peterson, who lost every
thing they had by firo. A good ptvc? of

Horace Dogue returned to AUian-1 ti-e
first of the week from a business trip to
New York where he bought a line of r" i
goods for his trade here. While in New
York Mr. Hogue visited a short while with
relatives.

Police Judge Herry is off on a hunting
and fishing frip to the Platte river, and

Mrs. Wyi. Mitchell and daughter Miss
Pearl returned Sunday from their visit at
the St, Louis fair where they spent two
weeks very pleasantly..
