Why Man Was Practicing Diving Through New York Crowd. At the Brooklyn brldgo approach the other day a man was obcerved malting frantic rushes Into the thick of tho crowd. Ah ovoryhody who boos to Brooklyn during rush hours doeB thl3, It Is necessary to explain why this particular man was observed. At first no one paid any attention to him excepting one old fellow with heart disease whom he jostled, and two young women with bundles who wcro knocked off their feet by tho rashness of his charge. Everybody clso was too intent on Hprlntlng past his neighbor or ndroltly disabling a rival to bother about such a common placo occurrence. It was tho repetition of hln rushes over the same ground and not tho ferocity of his behavior or his disre gard for tho softer sex that finally mndo him the subject of remark. When for the third time he retreated over ground thus gained, and as often returned to tho attack, a small, dys poptlclooklng bridge jumper whoso corns had been rudely trodden upon ventured a remonstrance. Subtly In serting his elbow In tho abdomen of the center rush, after tho most ap proved 'bridge jumping tactics, ho courteously Inquired, "What seems to be catin' you?" A look of pained surprise over spread tho features of the rusher. "You needn't be so unreasonable," he answered with offended dignity. "If you must know, I promised to do my sick wife's Christmas shopping In New York on Saturday afternoon, ami being a bit out of condition, I was Just getting In form. Out I -dldn t mean to mako myself conspicuous, I assuro you." And somehow the apology really did make him conspicuous for tho mo ment. New York Herald. Wonderful Human Hand. Tho human hand Is so beautifully formed, It has so fine a sensibliit. that sensibility governs ltd motion ro correctly, every effort of tho will h answered so Instantly, ai If tho In.1 1 Itself wcro tho seat of that will; it actions 'are so free, so powerful, ami yet so dolicato, that It seems to pos sess a quality lintlnct In Itself, and wo tveo It as we draw our breath imcIi moment, unconsciously, a.id have lost all recollection of the feeble and III dlrocted efforts of Its first exercifci-, hy which It has been perfected, hi the hand nro twenty-nine bones, from the mechanism of which result strength, mobility and elasticity. On the length, strength, motion and mo bility of the thumb depends tho power of tho hand. Without the fleshy ball of tho thumb, tho power of tho fingers would nvall nothing, and, accordingly, the largo ball formed ry tho muscles of tho thumb is the dis tinguishing character of the human hand. Italy's King as a Sportsman. The King of Italy is devoted to all outdoor sports, more especially ten nis, shooting, yachting, motoring and fishing. Thero Is a story that onco on returning from a very bad day's flshlug, tho King mot a poor man who had been very much more successful. The King stopped tho man and asked for a light. The man noticed that tho ilsh tho King was carrying wore few In numbor and small, and. not recog nizing tho King, chnffed H:n on his bad luck. "You might be the King," said tho man, "with that little lot." "Why?" asked tho King, slightly em barrassed. "Well," said tho man, "ovoryono knows that he's all right as a King, but he's no sportsman." V'lll Known Bootonlan Dead. V. ' in Duraut, treasurer of the Bosto:- 1 ranscript Company and for seventy years a faithful employe and guiding spirit of that corporation, died last week In his oighty-olghth year. Mr. Durant was born In Boston, studied law for a short time and In February, 1S34, became a clerk In the Transcript ofTlco. Eight years later he was business mnnnger, which posi tion ho held until 1870, when ho also undertook the duty of treasurer. In 188G, at his own request, he was re lieved of tho presidency, but until his death was treasurer and director. Refused Customary Holiday. Postmaster Ooneral Payno upset a long-established custom by refusing to give the 2,000 omployoj in his de partment a half-holiday the clay be fore Christmas. He had Intended to do so, but nfter consultation with snnio department chiefs he found thai such a courso would cause serious dolay In tho volume of work, so he decided to keep e. body at work as usual. Mr. Pay: alon Is In line with President ' .ami's contention- that it was a jerate violation ot law for headt 1 f departments to give clerks such a half-holiday. Is a Believer In Exercise. MayoV McClollan of New York occu pies nearly half an hour each morning in walking to his ofllce. He says that ho needs the oxerclso, and when in Congress walkod to the capltol eich morning. Ho Is a healthy lookiug young man and seems capable of any amount of work. Electricity in Farm Work. The use of electricity In connection with farm work is being strongly ad vocated. The idea that the light is deleterious to vegetation is said to be all wrong and that the contrary holds good. Accidents In New York. Tho number killed In Etroet acci dents In New York city has been djir lng the year almost two for oach woiklng day. FIERCE EAQLE8 OF THE ALPS. They Killed One of Their Huntera After a Desperate Battle. Tho Maritime Alps of eastern Franco have long been noted as being the haunt of tho most ferocious and powerful breed of orgies in existence. Children inm.rncraJo &o boon carried off by then, and they even at tack adults on occasions, sometimes with dire results. A postman named Gustavo Sllva, who carried the malls on foot between the villages of Sospello and Pugot Thenlers, was set upon while cross ing the pass by three largo birds, and frightfully Injured. Ho managed to drive off his winged assailants with the aid of his ulpen stock, and eventually reached his des tination with his bng of letters. But his caso was from tho flcst regarded as hopeless by tho local doctors, and after lingering In Indescribable agony for six days he succumbed to his wounds. Meanwhile two young French tour ists, Messrs. Joseph Monand and An tolno Neyssel, went up Into tho moun tains to try to kill tho birds that had done the damage, and were savagely attacked in their turn. Both men were armed, but the sudden onslaught of the huge-winged creatures com pletely unnerved them, and after fir ing only one Bhot they tried to oscapo by running. ' The birds, however, struck them down ere they had gone many yards, and they would havo doubtless been both torn to pieces where they lay but for the opportune arrival of a party of shepherds. Thcso succeeded in rescuing Mr. Neyssel alive, but terribly Injured, ho having sustained no fower than ten severe wounds In the head and back, besides innumerable minor lacera tions and nbrnsions. His companion, Mr. Monand, was killed outright early in tuo fray, and his body, when recovered, presented a most shocking spectacle. Mr. Neys sel recovered after six weeks in bod, but is disfigured for life. Stray Stories. A Child's dsa of Riches. A littlo street wait was taken onco to the house of a great lady and tho childish eyes that had to look so Bhnrply after dally bread were daz zled by signs ot splendor on every hand. "Can you get everything you want?" tin child asked the mistress of tho mansion. "Yc3, I think so," was the reply. "Can you buy anything you'd like to have?" ' Tho lady answered "Yes." And the child, who was of a medita tive turn of mind, looked at her half pityingly and said wonderlngly, "Don't you find it dull?" To tho keen littlo mind accustomed to llvo bird-liko from day to day and rejoicing over a better supply with tho delight born of rarity, the aspect of continual plenty and desires all gratifloJ by possession contained an idea of monotony that seemed almost wearisome. Exploring the Sea. The French naval engineer, Henaud, caUs attention to the fact that a cap tive balloon rising to a certain height may bo employed to discover the pres ence of rocks beneath the surface of tho water. Every sailor Knows that In ceitaln parts of the seas shallows can be detected In time by- tho color ing of the water so that they can bo avoided. From certain heights shal lows are shown still more plainly, as, for instnnce, from the hills surround ing the entrance to Brest. From this It follows that from a captive balloon at a certain height above the water, especially In waters containing chan nels, shallows can bo located with the eye, and better still through pho tography. Pat's Lesson In Golf. Pat had been helping tho greens keeper construct several tee3 at the new golf links, and during the noon hour had been given a few lessons in driving. A day or two later he was tolling his friend Casey nbout it. "Faith, Casey," he .said, "this game they call gplluf do bo a funny game. Yez have a little white 'ball an' a long stick wld a knob on the lnd av It, an' yes put the white brll on a littlo hapo av sand. Thin tho game Is to haul nil an' knock tho ball so far yez kin nlver find ut agin." "An' did yez hit tho ball whin yez tried?" asked Casey. "Did 01?" said Pat. "Thot's tho fun ny thing about golluf. Shure, tho first tolme Ol hit ut, Oi nlver touched ut!" Sympathy Misplaced. Edward L. Adams, representing tho United States as consul general at Stockholm, Sweden, was for several sears editor of tho Rochester Demo crat and Chronicle. While occupying that position he wrote an obituary no tice of a neighbor's child, whose trousers had caught Are during a Fourth of July celebration, burning tho little fellow so badly that he died In consequence. Mr. Adams ended his article with the statement that the sympathies of friends would go out to the bereaved parents. His shock tho next day may possibly bo Imagined when the types made him say that "tho sympathies of a largo circle of friends will go out to the burned pants." New York Times. Cigars Not a Bribe. In a case brought at Haverhill, Mass., to declaro the election of Mayor Wood void because during his canvass for tho olllco ho treated to cigars, and was, therefore, guilty of bribery within tho meaning of the law, tho grand jury of that city has found that there Is no cause for action as cigars cannot be i.eld to be "a valuable consldeiatlou."
