The steel trust lias nt last sustained
a'scverc loss. The company's plant at
Shelby, Ohio, estimated at three
million dollars, was consumed by fire
Wednesday night.
James L. Hlair, the World's Fair
director who departed from St. Louis
under indictment, died in Florida hist
week. The rcmnins- were brought
back to St. Louis for interment, and
the funeral of the once popular James
Blair was attended by only a few
persons.
Governor Cummins intends tc carry
his "Iowa Idea" on the tariff question
into the coming national convention by
being selected as a delegate. The Iowa
executive has commendable intentions,
but they will never meet with popular
favor in an assemblage presided over
by ono Mark Hanna.
Tho latest advices from the Japan
Russian situation arc to the effect that
leaco overtures are to be made by tho
latter government. Of course it is
more than probable that little Japan
will continue to keep hpr finger on the
trigger until further information is
forthcoming regarding her demands.
The committo on Indian affairs yes
terday reported favorably to the house
on tho bill providing for tho opening of
the Rosebud agency. The bill as re
ported provides that the price of nil
land within six months after the open
ng of tho lands for settlement shall be
!3 an acre, and the price of the land
taken after that time will bo S2.50 an

George Francis Train, whose millions
in money and whoso erratic disposition
made him an illustrious character, is
dead in New York. Though a man of
extraordinary mental scope and a
writer of more than ordinary ability ho
lacked a governor and his ccccutricitics
became his chief characteristic. "Citi
zen" Train was a conspicuous char
acter in western enterprises, and the
last of a vast fortune remains in the
possession of a number of lots in the
city of Omaha, now in litigation.
Rushville Standard: The Standard
editor was talking to a gentleman ono
day this week who was in Omaha the
day Judge Van Deventer handed down
his opinion in the Dietrich bribery
case, and he said that he, with others,
were at the Her Grande hotel, in the
bar room, and Dietrich was also there.
When the news of tho decision reached
the bar room Dietrich's cronies set up
a joyous yell and Dietrich, in a loud
and boisterous voice called to everyone
in" the room to step up and take a
drink to his future. prosperity, and kept
repeating the call, waiving his arms
and getting louder all the while.
Comment on such actions, by a man
holding tho position Dietrich docs, is
hardly necessary.
The reception tendered Hon. Win.
J. Byran on his return home to Lin
coln last Monflay night was a grand
affair and attests tho high esteem- in
which ho is held. In the history of
the state of Nebraska no public man
was ever greeted with such outburst
of enthusiasm. Mr. Bryan, in the
same exalted and masterly mind, cap
tivated his audience with that sincerity
and logical eloqueucc that has always
characterized his presence at public
receptions not only in tin's country but
from the foreign lands from whence he
has just returned. From all over the
state admirers were present to greet
Nebraska's noblest son. IfMiis speech
Mr. Bryan declared his allegiance to
tliose questions that affect the com
mon people and his voice rang out in
the same true tone that appealed in
defense of the masses in the past. His
loyalty is above reproach, and long
may he live.
Train robbing still continues to be a
profitable occupation. Train robbers
stolo an iron safe from the express car
of the Sunset limited on tho Southern
Pacific railway near San Louis Obispo,
Ca)i., yesterday morning, securing
58o,ooo. According to tho express
messenger's story, he left tho express
car and in tho discharge of his duties
wont iuto the baggage car, immediately
behind it. While the express car was
thus temporarily vacant, the thieves,
possibly hoboes who had been stealing
a ride, cut a hole in the front end door
and entered. They then forced open
the side door, threw out the safe and
presumably jumped after it- This was
an easy matter as tho train was mov
ing very slowly on an up grade. This
is the most novel and conveniout
method of trnin robbery' and will no
doubt be heartily indorsed by tho
fraternity of holdups.
